Professor (Dr) G L Sharma is Director, in Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) and Professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering. He is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and is an astute administrator and academician. He has more than 35 years of experience in the Academia and Industry.  Prior to this he was Dean Students Welfare and Proctor since June 2019 at Manipal University Jaipur and Director School of Automobile, Mechanical And Mechatronics Engineering for two years from Jun 2017- Jun 2019. He has extensive blended experience of Industry (22+years) and Academia (13). Prior to joining Manipal University as founding HoD and Professor of Mechatronics Department in 2012, he served in the Indian Navy as practicing Marine Engineer and commissioned officer from 1985 -2012 for 26.5 years. He took premature retirement in the rank Commander to pursue his passion in the field of higher education. He has been instrumental in setting up three universities in the leadership position namely Manipal University Jaipur, Amity University Kolkata and JECRC University Jaipur.

He has handled wide-ranging major technologies while serving onboard ships and submarines built in US, France, Germany, Russia, UK and indigenously built ships. He has worked in the different capacities in leadership positions onboard ships as Chief Engineer, Controller Material Planning, Equipment Health Monitoring and Machinery Certification Authority, Marine Engineering Trainer on Indian Naval warships, Policy Maker and Production Manager etc. His significant warships appointments include INS Vikrant, INS Viraat, INS Taragiri and INS Shakti.

Dr. GL Sharma belongs to that rare breed Engineering professionals who has all throughout his career was concurrently, yet actively, involved with Academia. He was the Founder Director of Four School and founder member of Amity University Kolkata, Founder Director and Dean Engineering of JECRC University Jaipur. He is fellow of Institution of Engineers, Fellow of Indian Institution of Marine Engineers and life time member of Condition Monitoring Society of India. He received his B. Tech (Mechanical) from Naval College of Engineering, Pune, and M. Tech (Systems & Control Engineering) from IIT Bombay and Ph D from IIT Bombay. He also earned BA(1985) from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and MBA from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

He has more than 50+ publications and has won the awards of best theory paper (1998) and best technical paper (2012). He has also undertaken numerous projects during his long-spanned engineering career. He has guided Ph D and many PG and UG students. He was awarded Rajasthan Gaurav Ratna award by Mein Bharat Hoon organization in Jul 2021. His biography has been published Marquis who’s who. He has also been awarded dedication to duty award. He was also part of operation Vijay.

His area of interest is Marine Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Systems and Control Engineering, Nuclear Reactor Control Design, Automation, Vibration and Condition Monitoring, Predictive Maintenance and Human Resource Management.

He plays Golf and practices Yoga. His passion is to transform the Indian young population into constructive, productive, and responsible global citizens who can make a difference to the humanity.
