The Department of Information Technology at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was started in the year 1999. The aim of the department is to impart quality education in the area of Information Technology and to produce competent and industry ready engineers to meet the needs of the corporate world, different government sectors and the society as a whole.
The objective of various courses run by the department is to give in depth knowledge related to the fundamentals of Information and Communication Technologies, associated Software and Hardware Technologies, and also to make the students aware of the currents trends in the area of Information and Communication Technologies.
The department has six well equipped laboratories covering almost all major practical domains related to Information and Communication Technologies. The department also has a departmental library containing more than five hundred titles.
Students are encouraged to get involved in practical project development and research and development activities under the supervision of the members of faculty of the department. Students are also encouraged to take part in summer schools, different workshops and also national / international conferences. The department also encourages students to take part in various extra-curricular activities that include sports, cultural, and technical activities for overall holistic growth of the students.
The department has a rich history in terms of the achievements of the past students. Many students have done excel in their higher studies in various reputed universities abroad. Many students have also completed higher education from Indian institutions of high repute. Moreover, there are many students who are performing very well in their professional careers in the corporate world. Again some students of the department have established themselves as successful entrepreneurs.
