Overview

The first view of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) is awe inspiring and more than enough to motivate any one to be a part of this beautiful, resort like campus nestling on the banks of River Teesta in the verdant hills of East Sikkim. The institute is a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University located in Tadong, Gangtok.  Established in 1997, SMIT is part of the renowned Manipal Group that has made its mark in the field of education and health services in India and abroad. SMIT enjoys approval by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grants Commission (UGC). It is also accredited by NBA. In addition, it also holds ISO 9001 accreditation vide NS-EN ISO 9001:2000.

 

Infrastructure

SMIT is one of India’s premier technology and management institutes. Spread across 35 beautifully landscaped acres, the campus is home to over 3200 students, 220 members of faculty  and a large and efficient team of support staff. The institute is reputed for its state of the art infrastructure, well stocked air-conditioned library, advanced technology laboratories, a sports complex with swimming pool, food court, separate boys and girls hostels with rooms having attached baths, 24 hours running water with hot water facilities for winters, night canteens inside hostels, a electrical sub-station for 24 hour generator support etc. . All these facilities and amenities have made SMIT one of the best and most sought after engineering and management institutes in the nation.

 

Academics

The academic standard of SMIT is at par with the best institutes in the country. A highly qualified and dedicated faculty ensure that the students are provided with a holistic education that makes them job ready, industry ready and most important, life ready. The syllabus followed is prepared in consultation with industry experts and leading academicians from premier institutes like IIT Kgp, Jadavpur University, TAPMI etc. The course content in revised every three years to meet the changing demands of the industry. It is not without reason that our glittering alumni are placed with reputed organizations like Microsoft, Oracle, SAP Laps, TCS and also pursue higher studies from IIT's and IIM's.

Research

Research is the life blood of a sound academic institute.  SMIT takes pride in the fact that it has emerged as a research friendly institute. A number of scholars have been awarded with PhD and many more scholars from within and outside the institute are registered for doctorate. A number of sponsored projects have also been assigned to SMIT. The faculty members are also selected to do research on about 17 sponsored projects approved and financed by DST, DBT,DRDO and AICTE. As a result, apart from books, a number of papers by the members of the faculty are also published in peer reviewed, high index journals of international repute. The students are also guided and encouraged to participate in research activities.

 

Courses

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology offers a range of courses in Engineering, Basic Sciences and Management Studies. The courses offered are as follows:

  • BTech in Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, .
  • MTech in almost all branches given above
  • BBA, MBA with specialization in Marketing , Finance, Human Resources and Systems
  • BCA, MCA
  • MSc in Applied Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • Centre for Material Science and Nano Technology
  • PhD in all streams

 

Ambience

The ambience of the college gives the students a feeling of a home away from home. Being a residential college, it attracts students not only from Sikkim but also from all over the country. The Institute provides full residential facilities to the students. There are separate well equipped and furnished hostels for boys and girls. The hostels provide excellent accommodation to nearly 3000 students. All rooms have attached bathrooms. To cater to the students nutrition needs, the institute provides canteens and food courts apart from a professionally run mess.

 

Health Care

The institute has a well equipped dispensary and two resident doctors with support staff. Those requiring specialized treatment are sent to Central Referral Hospital (CRH), a part of Sikkim Manipal University in Tadong, Gangtok.

 

Facilities

In order to make the campus a self contained institute catering to all the needs of the students and the staff, a shopping centre has been provided wherein facilities like ATMs, Stationery, Binding, Lamination, and Photocopying etc. are available.

SMIT enjoys a strong student placement record. SMIT students have been placed in well-known national and international organizations such as, TCS, Infosys, Wells Fargo, Cognizant, ANZ, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Accenture, Satyam, Microland, NIIT, Tata Motors, Tractor India Ltd., Hindustan Motors, Skytech, Ushacom, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Tata Elxsi, Hutch, ANZ, IDBI,HDFC (Mutual funds), Convergys, Times of India and many other reputed and prestigious organizations. SMIT is poised to attain even greater heights in times to come. The untiring effort of each and every member of the staff and the students to achieve that greatness in life will definitely see SMIT growing and moving from one milestone to the next with glory and success.

 

EDUCATION BEYOND ACADEMICS

Apart from academics, the students are provided with ample opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities so that their latent talents are nourished and allowed to flourish. Each department holds its annual fest and the much awaited annual fest of the institute, KAALRAV is held in February. These activities also help them to cultivate a spirit of healthy competitiveness.

    Additions were made to the MIT engineering courses, for example, a one-year post-graduate diploma course was added in industrial engineering. Later in 1975, MEC changed its name to Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT).

    MIT has also taken an active part in community development in Manipal.  A land-use plan for the town has been developed by MIT staff, as well as standardized low-cost plans for college buildings.

    TA Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) was set up this year. Today, it is among the leading management institutes in the country. 

    TAPMI’s mission is to build capacity in professional management in the country, and closer home, to reinforce the existing educational and health infrastructure at Manipal.

    In early 2009, its 25th year running, TAPMI shifted to a new scenic 42-acre residential campus in Manipal.

    TMA Pai Hospital (TMAPH) began functioning at Udupi, to provide quality out-patient and family-planning services to the people of Udupi and neighboring localities.

    Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure like ICUs with ventilators, fully equipped operation theatres, radiology service, ultrasound and laboratory etc., the hospital has links with the tertiary-care Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, which ensures priority treatment to patients on referral from Dr TMA Pai Hospital.

    It was a time when the hotel industry was still in its infancy; there was a dearth of trained professionals and training colleges. The College of Hotel and Restaurant Management Studies (CHARMS) was established in October 1986 as a unit of the Dr TMA Pai Foundation. 

    In August 1987, the Foundation joined hands with Welcomgroup, the Hotels division of ITC Ltd, and  the college was renamed the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA).

    Manipal College of Nursing was established at Manipal.  In 1991, Manipal Hospital Bangalore (MHB) was set up, accredited by NABH and AAHRPP, and comprising 55 clinical departments and 11 centers of excellence. 

    It is a flagship hospital under Manipal Health Enterprises and a landmark healthcare destination in south India. Ranked the Best Super specialty Hospital in Bangalore by THE WEEK-HANSA, it is among the best hospitals in India for cardiology.

    In 1992, the KMC Hospital at Attavar, Mangalore was set up as a teaching hospital of KMC, Mangalore and an associate hospital of Manipal University.  

    That very year, the Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was set up.
