INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION CELL:

Overview

The International Collaboration Cell at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology is a resource center for the Institute’s international collaborations. It facilitates the development of memorandum of agreements and partnerships with universities abroad as well as international organizations. It also aims to promote the involvement of SMIT’s faculty members, staff and students in international research and development projects. It also helps to align international opportunities with the college’s curriculum enabling student mobility across institutions.

 

 

STUDENT’S CLUB

IAESTE

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is an independent, non-profit and non-political student exchange organization. It provides students in technical degrees with paid, course-related training abroad and employers with highly skilled, highly motivated international trainees. With more than 80 member countries and over 4000 traineeships exchanged each year, it is the largest organization of its kind in the world. CI-SMU, the Cooperating Institute Sikkim Manipal University of IAESTE started functioning from the year 2016. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between IAESTE India and Sikkim Manipal University on 5th April, 2016 to facilitate the exchange of students with universities and organizations abroad.  Every year through IASTE we have had an active student exchange programs for internships.

 

AIESEC

AIESEC is a non-governmental not-for-profit organization in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), affiliated with the UN DPI, member of ICMYO, and is recognized by UNESCO.

AIESEC facilitates International Exchanges where each opportunity is aligned with a Sustainable Development Goal by United Nations (UN). AlESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. It provides both technical and non-technical internships. The organization spans 128 countries and territories with over 1,00,000 exchanges per year. It started functioning in Sikkim Manipal University in the year 2018, from then, students associated with AIESEC have had a life-changing experience.

 

Study Abroad Program (SAP)

The program allows students of SMIT to earn external credits from foreign universities/institutes with which SMU/SMIT has a MOU or any other university for which a student has an approval for the study abroad program.

 

Highlights of the program:

  • B.Tech. students after successfully completing 2 years and MBA/MCA/M. Tech students after successfully completing 1 year of their studies are eligible for the program.
  • Students can avail the program provided curriculum of the semester to be studied abroad matches with the curriculum of the host institution as per the following:
  1. For core courses syllabus matching should be at least 80%.
  2. Other electives may be mapped with the available subjects within the host institute’s curriculum from the same domain.
  • Must have consistent academic performance with CGPA 7 and above, without backlogs.
  • There should not be any record of disciplinary and malpractice cases.
  • It is desirable for the students to have good command over English and a sound financial background to support their study abroad.
  • The duration of the program is 6 months/1 year.

GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

TRANSPORTATION

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology is well connected by road from Siliguri. The closest airport, Bagdogdra, is located at 90 kilometers distance from SMIT. Cabs/buses are available from Bagdogra.

 

HOUSING/ACCOMMODATION

Hostel accommodation is available for all students. The hostel provides a cot, a mattress, a study table, a chair and a cupboard for each student. Every hostel has uninterrupted electricity, solar heated water facility, water cooler with aqua guard filter etc. Gym and other facilities may be availed by students upon arrival. No student should stay away from his/her room during the night except with prior written permission of the Warden. Students are requested to avoid singing aloud; shouting or making all types of noises that is likely to distract the attention of those who may be studying in their rooms or hostel libraries. Pets of all kinds are prohibited inside the hostel. Any damage caused to hostel property will be charged to the occupants of the room/block with a fine. Cooking in hostel rooms is not permitted.

 

SECURITY IN THE CAMPUS

SMIT is a secured campus. Complete safety and security is ensured by the Block Supervisors, Warden and Chief Warden (inside the Hostels) and by the Security Staff and Chief Security Officer (inside the Campus). All students are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of the Institute and the code of conduct as applicable to Indian Students doing the same course. Any act within the campus that may violate or spoil the academic atmosphere in the Institute will not be appreciated and the student found guilty of such offence will be dismissed and sent back to their country without any cost to the Institute.

 

STUDENT CLINICS

Student Health Clinics are made available to students for Non-Accident and Non-Emergency cases. Students can avail medical aid at this clinic.

 

FOOD

Students can avail the mess facility in the hostel on monthly basis. Food Court and Canteen are located on campus with wide variety of food and beverages made available on campus. Apart from these, students have plenty of options to taste different cuisines at the local restaurants outside located around the campus.

 

INTERNET FACILITIES

SMIT is equipped with excellent IT infrastructure. The campus is completely wired through Optical Fiber Communication with Wi-Fi at most of the locations including hostels.

 

SPORT FACILITIES

The campus has playground for cricket, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball with individual sports court. MARENA, an indoor sports complex, is a new attraction in SMIT. The arena houses gymnasium, badminton courts, basketball courts, squash courts, swimming pools, separate area for practicing yoga etc.

 

IDENTITY CARD

Each student is issued an ID card. This card will also function as Access Control card. Duplicate/replacement ID card will be issued on additional payment.

 

DRESS CODE

While we respect the dressing norms of different societies and culture, we also expect the students to adhere to a befitting dress code while visiting the University office, attending the college and at the University’s formal functions. The dress code is applicable to all students on campus, hence we seek your cooperation in abiding to these regulations.


VISA REQUIREMENT

Foreign national has to have a valid Student Visa. Tourist visa is not acceptable. Student/s should

  • Mandatorily apply for ‘student/Intern’ visa  with special endorsement mentioning the purpose of  visit.Students visiting on ‘tourist’ visa will not be entertained. University has every right to withdraw the internship if the student comes on a tourist visa.
  • If the Student Visa expires during the course of their study, then such students have to apply for extension of visa at the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO) at Gangtok at least 60 days prior to its expiry. 
  • Foreign students should also renew their RC and RP at the FRRO’s office at Gangtok as and when it expires or if they come with a new student visa. They should also carry the document every time they travel to their country as this will have to be produced at the Immigration Counter in India before departure.
  • Services such as Visa extension, Registration, Registration extension etc. are now available online in the e-FRRO portal https://indianfrro.gov.in.

 

Note: The students belonging to the following countries will require to obtain special clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India in order to pursue their courses in SMIT viz., China, Nigeria, Pakistan & Myanmar or as notified by the Ministry of  Home Affairs, Government of India time to time.

 

INNER LINE Permit

Foreign students must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim. These can be obtained from all Indian Missions, Sikkim Tourism Offices at New Delhi, Kolkata, District Magistrates Office of Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Rangpo on the strength of an Indian Visa. The 15 days duration Permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photocopies of the passport and visa along with two pass port photos of the applicants are made available. The permissible duration of the stay for foreign tourists is 15 days initially.

The State Government is authorized to extend the same by a further period of 30 days. The extension of the permit can be obtained from FRO at Gangtok and office of Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts.

 

REGISTRATION AT FRRO

All foreign students holding a Student Visa are required to register with the FRRO within 14 days of their arrival in India. The FRRO is located at Gangtok (30 kms from SMIT).

Office of International Collaborations will facilitate your visit to the FRRO. Our office will guide you through the FRRO formalities. Please bring along your original passport and 4 passport size photographs on your way into the office.
