HISTORY

Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 vide Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995).  SMU is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 vide letter No F. 9-7/96 (CPP-I) dated 9th Dec 1998 and approved by the Government of India.

 

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence in year 1997 as a result of the agreement signed on 15th November, 1992 between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence in year 1997 as a result of the agreement signed on 15th November, 1992 between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide. 


SMIT enjoys approval of all the courses by regulatory bodies like All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grant Commission (UGC). It was accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA)/ACCR-860/06 dated 22 January 2008 and the renewal process is on. In addition, it also holds ISO 9001 accreditation vide NS-EN ISO 9001:2000.

SMIT started with courses in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the year 1997 with the approval sought form AICTE on 8th August 1996. Present day all the engineering courses viz; Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication (ECE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE), Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Information Technology (IT) and various Post Graduate Courses viz; MBA and MCA are approved by AICTE. In addition it also runs a various UGC approved courses viz; BBA, BCA, MSc (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).


Set up at Majhitar, the campus is spread across 35 beautifully landscaped acres. The campus is home to 3500 students, 250 faculty and industry experts and a large and efficient team of support and service staff. The institute is reputed for its state of the art infrastructure: Wi-Fi enabled campus, well stocked library, and advanced technology laboratories. Academic collaborations and twinning programs with several universities viz; Leicester University – UK, Lancaster University – UK,  Andrews University – US, Milwaukee School of Engineering – US ensures that students get international exposure and expertise. All these facilities and amenities have made SMIT one of the best and most sought after engineering and management institutes in the nation.

The institute location on the banks of River Teesta, surrounded by green hills, adds to the vibrancy of the campus and makes it an ideal place for learning.

1995

MoU signed between

  • Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation.

1996

AICTE Approval granted for Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication and Computer Engineering with intake of 60 students each.

1997

Establishment of SMIT at 5th Mile, Tadong

1999

AICTE Approval granted for Information Technology with intake of 60 students.

2000

Establishment of SMIT at Majhitar, Rangpo.

Infrastructure Added:

  • C' Block of College Building,
  • Workshop Building,
  • Boys Hostel with 164 rooms (Hostel No 1) and
  • Girls Hostel with 99 rooms (Hostel No. 3)
  • Four Floors of Staff Housing 2BHK with 24 Flats

2001

AICTE Approval granted for PG course on MCA with intake of 60 students, Computer Engineering intake revised to 90, Electronics and Communication intake revised to 90 students and Electrical and Electronics revised to 40 students respectively.

Infrastructure Added:

  • D'&'E' Blocks of College Building,
  • Three more Sheds of Workshop
  • Capacity in Hostel No 1 increased by 328 rooms & Hostel No 3 by 36 rooms
  • Staff Housing 2 BHK increased by 12 flats
  • Boys Mess & Canteen completed

2002

AICTE Approval granted for Mechanical Engineering with intake of 60 students. AICTE Approval Computer Engineering intake revised to 120, Electronics and Communication intake revised to 120 students and Electrical and Electronics revised to 60 students respectively.

Infrastructure Added:

  • Staff Housing 1BHK (30 flats) completed
  • STP Completed
  • Security room at Main gate
  • Sub - Station completed

2003

Infrastructure Added:

·         Hostel No 2 for Boys with (164 rooms)

MoU signed between:

  • Techno India Group and SMIT for conducting post graduate courses in IT, Power electronics, digital electronics & advanced communication.

2004

AICTE Approval granted for PG course on MBA with intake of 60 students and M.Tech in Power Electronics with intake of 18 Students.

Infrastructure Added:

  • P & M Wings of Hostel No 2 Completed

MoU signed between

  • Andrews University, US and SMIT for Academic exchange programme.

2005

AICTE Approval Information Technology with intake revised to 45 students.

Infrastructure Added:

  • Staff Housing 1BHK with 10Flats

MoU signed between

  • Lancaster University, UK and SMU to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between two institutions for academic exchange programme.
  • Milwaukee School of Engineering, US to promote academic exchange programme.

2006

Infrastructure Added:

  • Q, R, N & O wings of Hostel No 2 completed
  • Staff Housing 1BHK with 10 more flats

2007

Infrastructure Added:

  • Ground Floor of A Block of College Building
  • Staff Housing 1BHK with 10 more flats

MoU signed between

  • National Innovation Foundation and SMIT

2008

AICTE Approval for PG Course on MCA with intake revised to 45 students.

Infrastructure Added:

  • Three Floors of MSC Building

MoU signed between

  • Leicester University, UK and SMU to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between two institutions for academic exchange programme.

2009

Infrastructure Added:

  • Girls Hostel No 4 with 160 rooms
  • Girls Mess Completed
  • Ground Floor of B Block of College building

MoU signed between

  • Infosys and SMIT for Campus Connect Programme

2010

Infrastructure Added:

  • Capacity of Girls Hostel No 4 increased by 96 rooms
  • First Floor of A & B Blocks of College Building

MoU signed between

  • Adhesion Institute, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, TuDelft, Netherland for establishment of State of the art-facility lab for Nanotechnology and to start the M.Tech in Applied Nano-Technology.

2011

AICTE Approval Information Technology intake revised to 90, Electrical and Electronics revised to 90 students respectively.

Infrastructure Added:

2012

AICTE Approval granted for AEI with intake of 60 students. AICTE Approval Mechanical Engineering intake revised to 120.

Infrastructure Added:

  • College Building A & B Blocks 2nd floor completed
  • Staff Housing 2BHK (33 flats) completed
  • 3rd Floor of MSc Building 

2013

AICTE Approval granted for PG course on M. Tech. (CSE), M. Tech.(DEC), with intake of 18 students each.

Infrastructure Added:

  • Open Air Theatre of 800 seating capacity.

2014

AICTE approval for Civil Engineering revised to 120 students, Computer Science and Engineering intake revised to 180.

2015

MoU signed between

  • RCI, Hyderabad and  ECE Department of SMIT for Design & Development of Digital Radar System named as SOFTWARE RADIO SYSTEM (SRS)         
  • Manipal University Technology Business Incubator and SMIT

2016

MoU Signed between

  • NISG and SMU for e-Governess Programme.

2017
  • A Supercomputing Facility was set up to provide High Performance Computing (HPC) facility “PARAM SHAVAK” in collaboration with C-DAC.
  • An “Innovation Studio” was created to for the students to garner innovative ideas and convert them into commercially viable products.
  • Alumni Engagement Cell was set up to facilitate alumni to take an active part in institutional affairs.
  • International Collaboration Cell and Student exchange program , IAESTE set-up in SMIT
  • Centre for Faculty Development has been set-up to impart training stage-wise to cater to the needs of every level of cadres of the teaching staff. 
  • A special Coaching Unit has been established to prepare students for GATE, GRE, NET and other competitive exams.
