OVERVIEW

 

The department aims to provide the students strong foundation in various areas of psychology. The focus on facilitating acquisition of basic skills in major areas of application (e.g. psychological testing, experimentation, counselling, interviewing, developing psychological tools, behaviour modification, data analysis, report writing) enabling students to excel at professional and personal levels.

 

B.A. (Hons) Psychology and Ph.D. program were introduced in DHSS in Tadong campus in the year 2022. The department is established with B.Sc. Clinical Psychology from academic session 2023-24. The postgraduate programs will be introduced in near future. 

Vision

The department strives to be recognized for imparting quality education in psychology with strong theoretical foundation and practical skills leading graduates to contribute to society and the nation.

Mission

1.       To nurture the potential in every student by providing him/her strong foundation in various areas of psychology.

2.       To impart theoretical and practical knowledge to students enabling them to excel at professional and personal levels.

3.       To enhance the skills of the students in a qualitative direction where they learn to explore and employ their growing acumen in real life fields.

Objectives

1.       To orient the students towards scientific and humanistic study of the complexities of human mind and behaviour.

2.       To impart knowledge of basic psychological concepts and methods.

3.       To help shaping cognitive, affective and behavioural abilities of students.

4.       Facilitating acquisition of basic skills in major areas of application.

5.       To develop a strong sense of ethical and moral aptness in general and in the context of learning and its assessment in particular.

Program Educational Objectives 

The graduates should be able to:

  1. demonstrate the ability to have professional competence in applying psychological logic, techniques, and participation in group projects.
  2. demonstrate the ability to develop specialized skills suited to specific sub fields of psychology (e.g. clinical, industrial, rehabilitation).
  3. demonstrate the ability to consult, review and use scholarly literature for problem formulation in specific areas.
  4. demonstrate the ability to use data analytic procedures using SPSS like computational software.
  5. gain knowledge about the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology.
  6. demonstrate the ability to understand and apply various inquiry skills and integrate psychological research principles in various fields.
  7. demonstrate the ability to develop cognitive, affective, and behavioural abilities to become responsible psychology professionals and researchers.

 

The department offers following degree programs:

 

3-year UG Degree: On successful completion of three-year B.A. / B.Sc. programme, a UG Degree will be awarded in the Major discipline (Psychology / Clinical Psychology) after securing 120 credits in three years.

 

4-year UG Degree (Honours): A four-year UG Honours degree in B.A. (Hons) Psychology/ B.Sc. (Hons) Clinical Psychology will be awarded after securing 160 credits on successful completion of four-years.

 

4-year UG Degree (Honours with Research): Students who secure 75% marks and above in the first six semesters and wish to undertake research in the major discipline can choose a major research project or dissertation with publication. A four-year UG Honours with research degree in Psychology/Clinical Psychology will be awarded on successful completion of four years.

 

Laboratories

Practical skills, including an appreciation of the link between theory and practice, will constitute an important aspect of the teaching-learning process. The department has well-equipped laboratory for both psychological testing and experimentation.  The lab practicums consist of instruments and psychological tools to give hands-on training to study memory, attention, intelligence, personality, aptitude, attitude, and disorders etc. The course structure contains regular field visits, workshops, and expert guest lectures to give the varied exposure to the students.
