EVENT SUMMARY:

On 12th August 2024, C-quad of SMIT witnessed a vibrant celebration of Anti-Ragging Day, aimed at spreading awareness among students about the importance of maintaining a ragging-free environment. The event was honored by the presence of Cdr (Dr) G L Sharma, Director, SMIT, along with Prof. (Dr.) N. K. Bhattacharyya, Associate Director (Student Affairs), HODs, faculty members, and students from various departments. A highlight of the occasion was a powerful Nukkad Natak (Street Play) performed by Club Cinemates, which effectively conveyed the message against ragging. Additionally, Club Artisti played a significant role in decorating the C-quad, enhancing the atmosphere and reinforcing the anti-ragging message. The event served as a strong reminder of the institution's commitment to ensuring a safe and welcoming campus for all students.

The Play: A Journey Through the Realities of Ragging

The play was not just a performance but an emotional journey, meticulously crafted to depict the harsh realities of ragging. Each scene illustrated the profound impact that ragging can have on an individual's life, emphasizing that it is far from being a harmless tradition.

 Scene 1: The Vlog Incident

The play began with a fresher making a vlog when two seniors approach him. They force him to perform mimicry and do sit-ups, highlighting the subtle and often overlooked forms of ragging that can seem trivial but are deeply humiliating.

Scene 2: Substance Abuse Coercion

In the second scene, a senior scolds his junior and then forces him to consume a substance. When the junior refuses, he is made to swim on the floor and run, demonstrating how ragging can escalate to angerous levels, involving physical and psychological torture.

Scene 3: Attire and Attitude

The third scene focused on a female junior who is forced by her senior to change her attire and dance. The senior also demands that she not show any attitude. However, the dynamic shifts when the junior reveals that she has recorded their conversation. The senior immediately becomes polite and offers help, portraying how power dynamics can shift when the victim takes a stand.

Scene 4: Misunderstood Innocence

In the fourth scene, an innocent senior, who attempts to talk to a junior, is mistakenly complained about. The Director then calls the senior and warns him, showing how misunderstandings can lead to unfair consequences, further complicating the issue of ragging.

Scene 5: Redemption and Resolution

The final scene brings all the seniors together as they continue to rag a junior. The innocent senior from the previous scene intervenes, urging them to stop, explaining that he was unjustly called out because of their actions. At that moment, the Director enters, learns from the freshers about the innocent senior's good intentions, and sends the freshers and the innocent senior away. He then scolds the guilty seniors and instructs them to collect their suspension letters, underscoring the seriousness with which ragging is treated by the institution.

Post-Play Guidance and Commitment

Following the play, a brief yet crucial guidance session was held. The session ensured that every student was informed about the resources available to them if they ever encountered or witnessed ragging. Emphasis was placed on the importance of reporting such incidents and the availability of help through the national anti-ragging helpline and website.

The event concluded with a powerful chant, "Na Karege, Na Sahege, Ragging Ko Hum Na Kahege," which echoed through the room as a collective promise to eliminate ragging from the campus. This moment of unity marked a shared commitment among all attendees to create a kinder, more supportive environment for everyone at SMIT.

The Anti-Ragging Day didn’t just raise awareness; it reinforced the resolve within the SMIT community to stand against ragging and ensure that no student feels unsafe or disrespected on campus.
