1992 :
Memorandum of Agreement signed between Government of Sikkim and Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG) for improving educational opportunities and Health Services in Sikkim. Specific purpose of collaboration was to establish an Institute of Medical Sciences.
1994:
Part of Central Referral Hospital became functional.
1995:
Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences was established in accordance with Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Science Act, 1995 (9 of 1995).
1997
1. As part of the Agreement 1992, Central Referral Hospital (CRH) was established as referral teaching hospital and was duly inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim on 07 March 1997.
2. An application was submitted to Medical Council of India (MCI) for starting a Medical College with an annual intake capacity of 100 students.
3. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was established with first batch of students.
2001
1. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) established.
2. Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing established.
3. Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy established.
2003:
A revised agreement was signed on 15 May 2003 between Govt. of Sikkim, Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences and Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG) wherein GoS agreed to provide its industrial units and its entire Health Care establishment for the academic exposure of the students.
GENESIS
The Manipal Group was started by Padmashree awardee Dr. Tonse Madhav Ananth Pai, a doctor, educationist, banker and philanthropist by his futuristic vision, which changed the destiny of thousands. Manipal is the nucleus of 57 educational institutes and has remained in the forefront of medical education since 1953. It epitomizes the role of the private sector in higher education and the concept of pubic private participation in health care. Today MANIPAL EDUCATION Group has five universities: Manipal University (Karnataka), Sikkim Manipal University (Sikkim), American University of Antigua, Manipal International University, Kualalumpur, Malaysia and Manipal University (Jaipur), 11 hospitals in India and abroad, 26 professional colleges and 11 campuses: 5 in India (Manipal, Mangalore, Bangalore, Sikkim, Goa & Jaipur) and 5 overseas (Nepal, Malaysia(2), UAE & Antigua). With over 2,00,000 students, 3,00,000 Alumni, the group offers 195 courses across 14 streams and has enrolled students from 51 countries.
Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence on November 15, 1992 as a result of the agreement signed between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide. It is the first ever Public Private Partnership in the country for higher Education and Health Care Services. The University has two campuses: Medical campus and the Technology campus. Government of Sikkim provides a grant of Rs. 2.25 Crores per annum for the hospital against which CRH provides free treatment to BPL families and concessional treatment to other residents of the State.
The University was established in 1995 vide Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995). SMU is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 vide letter No F. 9-7/96(CPP-I) dated 9th Dec 1998 and approved by the Government of India. All courses run by the university are approved by the regulatory bodies like Medical Council of India (MCI), Nursing Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Distance Education Council.
The Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2009 was passed by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on 12 Dec, 2009 and received the assent of The Governor of Sikkim on the 22nd of January 2010. Vide Notification No. 13/LD/P/2010, Dated: 08/04/2010 of Sikkim Government, Sikkim Manipal University of Health Medical and Technological Sciences was changed to Sikkim Manipal University.
According to the said Act the University would be able to disseminate advanced knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities for promoting interdisciplinary studies in the University.
