PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Department of Neurosurgery at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipal University is offering a six-month certificate course in basic neurotrauma.
The course is focused on a career in academic Neurotrauma, including both cranial and spinal injury. The setting is Central Referral Hospital (part of Sikkim Manipal University) which is one of the busiest neurosurgery centers in the state of Sikkim. The focus will include both surgical and intensive care management, particularly targeting therapy based on advanced multi-modality monitoring. The trainee will learn and become comfortable with issues such as identifying and optimally managing head injury and spinal injury from the emergency to operating room to discharge of the patient. The trainee will work in a coordinated manner in conjunction with the attending team of surgeons in Neurological Surgery, offering exposure to a variety of approaches and techniques. Non-surgical and critical care options for management of head injury, spinal column and cord injuries will also be an integral part of the training. Progressive independence in patient evaluation and management is encouraged during the course. They will be actively involved in the holistic management of the patient including cranial and spinal trauma.
Research is also an integral facet of the traineeship and is primarily focused on clinical/translational care. The Department of Neurological Surgery has a plethora of prospectively collected single- and multi-center traumatic brain injury data that will be made available to the trainee for investigation. The department is also continuously involved in single- and multi-center clinical research in India and the sub-continent, opportunities within which are also available.
