Prof. (Dr) Ashis Sharma has taken over as the new Director of Sikkim’s first engineering college, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) from March 1, 2018.
SMIT is a constituent college under Sikkim Manipal University (SMU).
Prof Sharma is the first local to be elevated as Head of Institution under SMU and first local Director of SMIT. He was previously serving as Registrar, Sikkim Manipal University from 2014-18.
Born to Dr and Mrs J N Sharma, retd Chief Dental Consultant, STNM Hospital of Upper Sichey, Gangtok, on October 2, 1974, Prof Sharma did his schooling from Tashi Namgyal Academy, Gangtok and passed his Class XII in 1993.
He obtained his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur and M.Tech in Engineering Management from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. Consequent to his M.Tech he also did his PhD from Jadavpur University. Post PhD he also successfully completed research project funded by AICTE.
Prof. Sharma started his career as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at SMIT in the year 1997 and subsequently got elevated to Reader then to Professor. He has held the position of Dean-Training & Placement (SMIT) before taking up the assignment of Registrar, SMU.
During his stint of 4 years at SMU as Registrar, he had been actively involved in running the University affairs complying to compliance and statutory requirements of the University.
