The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is a constituting Department of SMU, Humanities & Social Sciences is a multidisciplinary Department meant to develop social science understanding and awareness among the students of this region as well as of other parts of India. The Department of H.S.S offers Regular courses in Humanities and Social Sciences like BA, B.Com, MA and M.Com. Humanities and Social Sciences, program at SMU, challenge students to think critically and incisively about society, ideas, people, commerce, and the human condition. The syllabus and method of teaching differ from those at many other institutions in this region. These programs provide excellent preparation for career and professional studies. We are simultaneously one department that does house other major departments so that each student will likely have the most extensive communication with other subjects.

The Department of HSS, SMU is going to organize National conference on Political Economy of Tourism in the North Eastern States in association with Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi 110 025.

The Lit fest 2020, ‘Whispers for Now, Hear the Hills’, the first ever virtual Literary Fest of Sikkim and Darjeeling Hills was jointly organized by Sikkim Manipal University, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and Cafe the Twins, Methibari, Siliguri. The event was organised with an objective to promote literature and creativity in the Hills. Mr. Prayash Gupta and Mrs. Lekha Rai were the coordinators of the event.
The NSS Unit of the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Sikkim Manipal University, in collaboration with ICFAI University, Sikkim organised a one-day National Webinar on Youth, Gandhian Philosophy and Global Peace on 2nd October, 2020 to mark the International Day of Non-Violence and The Golden Jubilee Year of NSS on 02nd October 2020. A total of 110 participants attended the webinar from across the country. The webinar was graced by eminent resource persons and speakers who made discourses on the theme of the webinar.
