OVERVIEW

 

  • The Department of Sociology is a constituent unit of Sikkim Manipal Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at Sikkim Manipal University. It offers programs at the undergraduate (BA), postgraduate (MA) as well as Doctoral (PhD) levels.
  • The department aims at developing an understanding of the growing discipline of sociology and promoting skill-based education. An important goal of the various courses is to facilitate self-discovery in the students and ensure their enthusiasm and effective participation in responding to the needs and challenges of the contemporary world.
  • The course intends to enable students to develop the skills and competencies needed to meet the challenges and needs of the real world effectively.
  • The syllabus is created keeping in mind the changing nature of society, inculcating the required skills in the students to understand and respond to the same efficiently and effectively.

Sikkim Manipal Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts will be a leader in delivering outstanding experiential learning opportunities that encourage our students to develop to their full potential in both the classroom and the community. Driven by discovery, SMUFHSSLA will be a destination for those eager to advance our world by creating new knowledge. Together, we will foster the development of tomorrow’s leaders who will emerge from their studies ready to excel and contribute to the betterment of our local and global communities.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Sikkim Manipal Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts shall disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem relevant and to make provisions for integrated courses in commerce, humanities, social sciences and allied disciplines in the educational programmes of the University aligning with the NEW EDUCATIONAL POLICY 2020; to take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning processes, inter-disciplinary studies and research; to educate and train manpower for the development of the state in particular and the country in general ; to pay special attention to the improvements of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the State, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.

  • It uncovers within the student the ability to understand individual and group behaviour shaped by historical processes and how personal problems are connected to larger public issues.
  • It encourages students to use theory to conceptualize a problem and to select and organize relevant social facts.
  • It helps to unveil the ability to use social scientific methods to address sociological questions in recognition of practical and ethical issues.

Core Competencies 

  • The teaching-learning of various programs is organized through lectures, tutorials, projects, presentations, workshops, seminars, and experiential exercises.
  • Students are encouraged to understand real-life issues and participate in the programs and practices in the social context.
  • Practicum is incorporated as an important component, along with hands-on training in the use of various research methods such as field experiments, observation, survey, interview, and case study.
  • The use of ICT and mass media and web-based sources (like documentaries, videos, films etc.) is highly recommended to make the teaching-learning process interactive, proactive, and fruitful.
