Report on the Special Lecture by Prof. V. Krishna Ananth

On 27th November 2024, the Department of Political Science, FHSS&LA, Sikkim Manipal University, organized a special lecture by Prof. V. Krishna Ananth to commemorate Indian Constitution Day. Prof. Ananth, an eminent scholar from Sikkim University, is known for his work in history, law, and political thought.

The event opened with Ms. Tenzing Doma Bhutia, course coordinator for Political Science introducing Prof. Ananth, emphasizing his extensive academic and professional contributions. The programme continued with Mrs. Srijana Sharma, Convenor of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, reading the Preamble to the Indian Constitution. This symbolic gesture underscored the day’s significance and served as a fitting prelude to the lecture.

Taking the podium, Prof. Ananth began with an engaging reference to Socrates, drawing connections between philosophical inquiry and the principles underlying constitutional governance.

Prof. Ananth explored constitutionalism through a historical lens, tracing its evolution from early philosophical ideas to its contemporary interpretations. He examined how the concept has been shaped over time, particularly in the context of democratic governance, and discussed its relevance in safeguarding individual rights and ensuring accountability in state power.

Interweaving historical insights with reflections on current challenges, he highlighted the importance of constitutional values in resisting authoritarian tendencies and maintaining a balance between governance and liberty. His lecture resonated with the audience, sparking a lively Q&A session where students and faculty discussed constitutional amendments, judicial independence, and the interplay of history and law.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Bonita Pradhan, and attendees departed with renewed perspectives on the enduring relevance of constitutional ideals in shaping society. Prof. Ananth’s lecture was not just an academic exercise but a reminder of the fundamental principles that bind us as a polity.
