Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) has been spearheading research in the fields of Health Sciences and Technology since 1992. The university’s charter places particular emphasis on promoting cross-functional research activities, by providing world-class research facilities & expert guidance.
Sikkim Manipal College of Medical Sciences regularly initiates, encourages, and funds research activities by both faculty and students, in order to foster a spirit of investigation and analysis in healthcare and medicine. Similarly, the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology actively promotes, organizes, and supports technical research and innovation. Researchers at both institutes get access to research and innovation conducted by their peers and colleagues at Manipal Group universities worldwide. They also actively participate in seminars and conferences worldwide to present their findings and learn about the latest developments in their areas of specialization.
While Medical and Healthcare research is mostly funded by state government grants and the University, Technical research is sponsored by both the University and government and semi-government outfits like the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Defence Research and Development Organization, All India Council of Technical Education, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), National Natural Resources Management System, Department of Information and Electronics Technology and the Ministry of Science & Technology, among others.

The University is committed to safeguarding the interests of its PhD scholars alongside its UG and PG students, ensuring that their concerns are thoroughly addressed. In addition to the existing Student Grievances Mechanism available at both Majitar Campus and Tadong Campus, the University is pleased to announce the formulation of a Process Manual Exclusively for PhD Scholars. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive support to our research community.
The PhD Scholars' Grievance Redressal Policy will be presented for review and approval at the upcoming University Research Committee (URC) meeting in October 2024, with final ratification expected during the subsequent Academic Senate meeting 2024.
