The eligibility criteria for passing the Ph.D. entrance examination, based on the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2025, is as follows:

  • The student should score 50% marks in the entrance examination to be eligible for the interview.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in the entrance examination for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, differently-abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
  • For the selection of candidates based on the entrance test conducted by the HEI, a weightage of 70% for the entrance test and 30% for the performance in the interview/viva-voce shall be given.

The same will be applicable with immediate effect for SMU Regulations for Research Programme Leading to Award of Ph.D. Degree.

    GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL POLICY FOR Ph.D SCHOLARS

    The University is committed to safeguarding the interests of its PhD scholars alongside its UG and PG students, ensuring that their concerns are thoroughly addressed. In addition to the existing Student Grievances Mechanism available at both Majitar Campus and Tadong Campus, the University is pleased to announce the formulation of a Process Manual Exclusively for PhD Scholars. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive support to our research community.

    The PhD Scholars' Grievance Redressal Policy will be presented for review and approval at the upcoming University Research Committee (URC) meeting in October 2025, with final ratification expected during the subsequent Academic Senate meeting 2025.
