Sikkim Manipal University

Our HISTORY

Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 vide Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995).  SMU is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 vide letter No F. 9-7/96 (CPP-I) dated 9th Dec 1998 and approved by the Government of India.

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences came into existence in year 1997 as a result of the agreement signed on 15th November, 1992 between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation, with the aim of imparting exemplary education and health care services in the state of Sikkim and country wide. SMIT enjoys approval of all the courses by regulatory bodies like All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grant Commission (UGC). It was accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA)/ACCR-860/06 dated 22 January 2008 and the renewal process is on. In addition, it also holds ISO 9001 accreditation vide NS-EN ISO 9001:2000.

SMIT started with courses in Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the year 1997 with the approval sought form AICTE on 8th August 1996. Present day all the engineering courses viz; Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE),  CSE (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning), Electronics and Communication (ECE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence & Data Science and various Post Graduate Courses viz; MBA and MCA are approved by AICTE. In addition it also runs a various UGC approved courses viz; BBA, BCA, MSc (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

Set up at Majhitar, the campus is spread across 35 beautifully landscaped acres. The campus is home to 3500 students, 250 faculty and industry experts and a large and efficient team of support and service staff. The institute is reputed for its state of the art infrastructure: Wi-Fi enabled campus, well stocked library, and advanced technology laboratories. From 2010 - 2015 academic collaborations and twinning programs with several universities viz; Leicester University – UK, Lancaster University – UK,  Andrews University – US, Milwaukee School of Engineering – US ensured that students get international exposure and expertise. All these facilities and amenities have made SMIT one of the best and most sought after engineering and management institutes in the nation.

The institute location on the banks of River Teesta, surrounded by green hills, adds to the vibrancy of the campus and makes it an ideal place for learning.

MILESTONE

1953

Dr. Pai with PM Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri. Kasturba Medical College, India’s first private medical college, was started.

1955

Kasturba Medical College opened.

1957

MIT founded, Udupi Law College launched, and Medical Relief Society of South Canara set up to render services to rural areas.

1959

School of Nursing, Manipal started.

1960

Kasturba General Hospital inaugurated.

1963

College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal set up.

1965

Sri Mahaveera and Jagadguru Chandrasekhara Bharati Memorial College inaugurated. College of Dental Surgery, Manipal unveiled.

1968

Valley View International Health Club launched.

1971

First dialysis machine installed in Kasturba Hospital.

1973

Additions were made to the MIT engineering courses, including a one-year post-graduate diploma course in industrial engineering. In 1975, MEC changed its name to Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT also contributed to community development by developing a land-use plan for the town and standardized low-cost plans for college buildings.

1976

A Canadian private foundation, Operation Eyesight Universal, provided Kasturba Hospital with a fully equipped eye van.

1979

KMC celebrated its silver jubilee. Madhav Pai passed away at 81.

1980

TA Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) was established. Today, it is among India's leading management institutes. TAPMI’s mission is to build capacity in professional management and reinforce Manipal's educational and health infrastructure. In early 2009, TAPMI shifted to a new 42-acre residential campus in Manipal.

1984

TMA Pai Hospital (TMAPH) began functioning in Udupi to provide quality outpatient and family-planning services.

1986

It was a time when the hotel industry was still in its infancy; there was a dearth of trained professionals and training colleges. The College of Hotel and Restaurant Management Studies (CHARMS) was established in October 1986 as a unit of the Dr TMA Pai Foundation. In August 1987, the Foundation joined hands with Welcomgroup, the Hotels division of ITC Ltd, and the college was renamed the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA).

1990

Manipal College of Nursing was established at Manipal. In 1991, Manipal Hospital Bangalore (MHB) was set up, accredited by NABH and AAHRPP, and comprising 55 clinical departments and 11 centers of excellence. It is a flagship hospital under Manipal Health Enterprises and a landmark healthcare destination in south India. Ranked the Best Super specialty Hospital in Bangalore by THE WEEK-HANSA, it is among the best hospitals in India for cardiology.

1992

In 1992, the KMC Hospital at Attavar, Mangalore was set up as a teaching hospital of KMC, Mangalore and an associate hospital of Manipal University. That very year, the Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was set up.

1993

Manipal Academy of Higher Education awarded Deemed University status by Government of India, and is renamed Manipal University.

1994

Manipal College of Medical Sciences established in Pokhara, Nepal.

1996

1996 - Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, Gangtok, launched. 1997- Melaka Manipal Medical College established in Malaysia. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology established. 1998- Manipal Institute of Communication set up.

1998

Manipal Institute of Communication set up. Dr Pai's birth centenary stamp released.

1999

The Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences (MCOAHS), now School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) was established in 1999.

2000

Manipal University Dubai inaugurated.

2003

Golden Jubilee of Kasturba Medical College and Manipal Education and Medical Group.

2010

World class sports complex MARENA, launched in Manipal.

2011

MU Chancellor and President Dr Ramdas Pai awarded Padma Bhushan. Dr Ramdas Pai becomes second Indian to be honoured with Malaysian title ‘Datuk’. Manipal University Jaipur launched.

2012

Manipal Museum of Anatomy and Pathology opened.

2013

Manipal Group celebrates 60 years in Education and Healthcare. Golden Peacock Environment Management award for Manipal University.
