Established in the year 1997, Department of Mechanical Engineering has traversed the path of knowledge dissemination and generation for more than two decades. The department takes pride in grooming over 2000 Mechanical Engineering graduates to serve the nation and globally. Over these glorious years of its journey, it has carved a niche for itself in the key areas of teaching, research, entrepreneurship, administration and community service. The Department gives priority to update the curriculum primarily driven by the dynamics of technological advances and sustainable development on a continuous basis with active involvement of industry, academia, alumni, research organizations and other stakeholders.

In this research paper an attempt has been made to design and analyze a small turbojet engine using scrap automobile parts, turbocharger being the major component. The engine has been designed and analyzed in Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology using used turbochargers that can be used in modern automobile. In this design the thrust generated from the turbine section of a turbo charger is used to drive the power turbine generating the shaft power and also an attempt has been made to convert the turbo jet into turbo prop jet so as to increase its efficiency.

Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) which is also known as micro-lubrication, micro-dosing, mist coolant and near-dry machining is a process that came into existence due to the cost involved in cutting fluids as well as for environmental concern and reduction of health risks for machine operators. Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) is a process of sprinkling the mixture of air which is compressed and optimum cutting fluid is fed to the interface of the workpiece and the cutting tool either internally into and out of the tool or through the external system. This paper gives a review on some of the papers publicized with reference to MQL technique and its implementation with different cutting fluids for various machining processes of titanium based alloy.

In order to attain higher dimensional accuracy while generating intricate shape geometries on various difficult to machine materials, wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process is being extensively preferred in the present day manufacturing industries. For achieving the desired performance, it is often suggested to operate this process at the optimal combination of the available input parameters. Hence, this paper presents an efficient approach hybridizing design of experiments (DoE) method and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach to develop a meta-model for subsequent identification of the optimal parametric mix for a WEDM process while machining EN-8 carbon steel material. The derived optimal combination is validated based on the developed regression equations for the considered responses that provide better response values as compared to those obtained at the initial machining condition. This approach can also be successfully applied to identify the optimal parametric combinations for other machining processes.

Purchasing is an integral part of operation for a manufacturing firm. Most of the firms spend their half of income for purchasing. Finding the right product to purchase for achieving a company's aim ultimately depends on how well its selection of supplier has been. Selection of supplier plays a vital part for company's profit as it becomes a difficult task for the decision maker to process out of the feasible alternatives, with each having its own advantages and limitations, characteristics and applications. Hence, in this paper multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis (MOORA) while assigning weights estimated employing analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for solving some of the common supplier selection problems. The proposed methodology has been adopted to solve a printed circuit board supplier selection problem. The obtained results are also validated using technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) methodology that also identifies similar as that obtained using the proposed methodology.

The machining aspects of EDM sustains the discharge energy and discharge duration. This generated energy causes debris removal and evaporation of material. Therefore, in this chapter, an investigation is carried out to perform optimization of input process variables through the EDM process of ASTM A681 steel metal wielding the modified weighted TOPSIS MCDM technique. The study consists of process variables like discharge current, discharge duration, and discharge energy for the output response measurement of material removal rate (MRR) and average surface roughness. The multi-criteria decision approach is based on entropy, SDV, and mean-weighted TOPSIS and finds an output response related to the closeness coefficient between the feasible solution and the ideal solution. From the result, it is observed that the rank produced by mean weighted TOPSIS and SDV-TOPSIS are almost the same. But the rank produced by entropy-TOPSIS is slightly different as compared to the other method. However, the first, second, and third ranks are the same for all three techniques.

Metaheuristics-based nesting of parts in sheet metal cutting operation.

Nesting of regular and irregular shaped parts in a sheet metal having constrained boundary so as to maximize effective utilization of material with minimum wastage imposes a challenging task to the metal cutting industries. To resolve the problem, this paper presents the applications of six popular metaheuristics, i.e. artificial bee colony, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, differential evolution and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm with an objective to maximize effective utilization ratio during metal cutting operation. For all the metaheuristics, the considered parts are optimally allocated in the given sheet metal based on bottom left fill algorithm to minimize the corresponding nested height. It is observed that TLBO algorithm supersedes the others with respect to effective utilization ratio, nested height and computational effort. A comparative analysis using values of t-statistic also proves the uniqueness of this algorithm over the others in efficiently solving the nesting problems for regular and irregular shaped parts during sheet metal cutting operation.
