The NSS unit Sikkim Manipal College of
Physiotherapy, adopted the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification,
and Drought Resilience”, emphasising the need for ecological renewal
and sustainable land use. A tree plantation drive was organised within the
college campus, during which NSS volunteers and Faculty members planted a
variety of saplings to enhance green cover and support biodiversity. In
addition to this, a campus-wide cleanliness drive was conducted. Volunteers
diligently cleared litter, removed debris, and ensured proper waste
segregation, with special attention to neglected zones. The event witnessed
enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, programme officers,
and non-teaching staff. It not only contributed to a cleaner and greener campus
but also fostered a collective sense of environmental ownership and
responsibility among the college community.
Meanwhile, another NSS unit of SMU, Department of Allied Health Professions organized a cleaning and plantation drive in direct response to the global call to “Beat Plastic Pollution”. NSS volunteers were divided into groups and assigned different areas of the department for cleaning activities, focusing especially on the collection and proper disposal of plastic waste. Following this, 20 saplings were planted, each to be maintained by the volunteers on a rotational basis. The initiative, led by faculty coordinator Mr. Hormo Naso and supported by departmental staff, successfully highlighted the importance of reducing plastic usage while enhancing green spaces. The activities helped raise awareness about environmental protection and strengthened a sense of civic engagement among the participants. The unit also outlined plans for regular sapling maintenance and monthly cleanliness campaigns in surrounding areas.
The NSS unit of SMIMS, Department of Physiology, SMIMS celebrated the day through academic and creative engagement. With the theme “Nurture Nature, Save the Future”, the department organised a poster competition and a speech competition at the SMIMS auditorium. These events provided a platform for students to express their environmental concerns and ideas through art and oration. The programme was graced by Dr. Muralidhar V Pai, Dean, SMIMS, along with Heads of Departments from various disciplines of SMIMS. The participation of both faculty and students created a vibrant atmosphere of dialogue and reflection on ecological challenges and the role of individual action in mitigating them.
In conclusion, the World Environment Day 2025
celebrations across NSS units of Sikkim Manipal University served as a unified
yet multifaceted initiative towards ecological awareness and action. From
physical clean-up efforts and green campaigns to intellectual engagement, each
department contributed uniquely to the overarching goal of sustainability.
These collective efforts not only improved immediate surroundings but also
sowed the seeds for a more environmentally conscious University community. The
NSS units remain committed to carrying forward these values through continued
activities throughout the year.
