OVERVIEW

 

The Department of Paediatrics at SMIMS was established in 1997. The department believes in training the students in a friendly environment training the students in handling paediatric diseases with empathy and compassion.

The academic activities in the department include clinical teaching rounds, seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, mortality reviews and group discussions.

We try to contribute to priming the undergraduate students with basic paediatric knowledge while helping them learn good communication skills.

OBJECTIVES
  • Educational Support: Provide comprehensive educational support for MBBS students and MD Paediatric residents through access to resources, lecture materials, and learning aids.
  • Curriculum Enhancement: Enhance the Paediatric curriculum by offering supplementary materials, case studies, and interactive learning tools to enrich students' understanding of Paediatric medicine.
  • Clinical Exposure: Facilitate clinical exposure by having clinical case discussions and providing opportunities for hands-on learning experiences in Paediatric wards, outpatient clinics, NICU and PICU
  • Faculty Development: Foster faculty development by promoting skills development, workshops, TOTs and conferences.
  • Research Promotion: To motivate our undergraduate and MD Paediatrics students to pursue research in the field of Paediatrics
  • Community Outreach: Engage in community outreach by providing information on Paediatric health initiatives, preventive care programs, and opportunities for volunteer work or outreach activities aimed at improving child health in the local community.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Facilitate networking and collaboration among students, residents, faculty members, and alumni within the Paediatric community, both locally and globally, to foster professional growth and exchange of ideas.

KEY FEATURES:

MBBS:

  • Comprehensive Curriculum: A structured curriculum covering all essential aspects of pediatric medicine, including growth and development, common childhood illnesses, pediatric emergencies, and preventive care.
  • Interactive Learning: Incorporation of interactive learning methods such as case-based learning, problem-solving exercises, and simulation labs to enhance understanding and retention of pediatric concepts.
  • Faculty Mentorship: Access to faculty mentorship and guidance to support academic and professional growth, including assistance with career planning, research projects, and residency program applications.

 

MD Pediatrics:

  • Advanced Training: Advanced training in specialized areas of pediatric medicine, including General Pediatrics, Developmeetal Pediatrics, Neonatology and pediatric critical care among others
  • Clinical Rotations: Extended and more intensive clinical rotations in various pediatric subspecialties to develop expertise in diagnosing and managing complex pediatric cases, as well as exposure to specialized procedures and treatments.
  • Research and Publications: Opportunities for conducting original research, publishing scholarly articles, and presenting findings at national and international conferences to contribute to the advancement of pediatric knowledge and evidence-based practice.
  • Teaching Experience: Involvement in teaching and supervising medical students, interns, and junior residents, fostering leadership skills and preparing residents for future roles as educators and mentors in academic medicine.

MD Paediatrics:

  • Acquiring competencies relevant to all aspects of Paediatrics (new born to adolescent) that are essential to function as a clinical expert in providing new born and paediatric health services for the community at all levels.
  • Recognizing the holistic health needs of healthy neonates, infants, children, and adolescents
  • Performing responsibilities of the provision of clinical care in keeping with principles of the National Health Policy.
  • Performing responsibilities in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Acquiring skills in effectively communicating not only with the health team but with the child, family, and the community
  • Active involvement in keeping oneself up to date with scientific advances in Paediatrics and Medico legal aspects of practice.
  • Orientation to principles of research methodology enabling critical appreciation of published scientific evidence and contributing through scholarship

COLLABORATIONS

  • Involved in monthly training for nurses/doctors in attending deliveries under the National Resuscitation Program (IAP NRP FGM).
  • Initiates in organising workshop/CME in Paediatrics.

 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Only NICU serving the entire state of Sikkim.
  • NICU admissions for the year 2013 were 640 and it has crossed this figure this year.
  • OPD and Hospital admission for the year 2014 is more than 11000 and more than 1800 respectively.
  • Department of Pediatrics is run by 16 trained doctors.
  • Only Tertiary hospital with Pediatric support to Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urosurgery and Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgery.
  • Bed strength of 30 pediatrics beds,10 bedded NICU,4 Bedded PICU with state of the art infrastructure.

 

FACULTY

The aim is to be attached to the families when they are in need of us most of the time when their little ones are unwell and in the process teach our students the subject which helps them to serve the society.
