The Department of Orthopedic Surgery of SMIMS has been involved in providing quality care to patients with musculoskeletal problems since 2001.
The Department of Orthopedics at Central Referral Hospital, is renowned as among the leading orthopedics centers in Sikkim and the North-East India region. The department is committed to providing excellent patient care and outstanding education in Orthopedic Surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. Along with general orthopedics, the department provides patient care in subspecialties such as complex trauma of extremities, spine, and pelvic acetabular trauma, knee arthroscopy & sports medicine, and joint replacement surgeries. We have, in addition, rehabilitation support by full-fledged physiotherapy and occupational therapy services.
The department presently, has two units each headed by a Professor, who is assisted by three other faculty members. The dedicated faculties are also actively involved in imparting quality knowledge and training to young medical graduates.
Department of orthopedics SMIMS has also started post-graduate courses (MS) from the year 2021 with annual intake of 3 students per year with the aim of providing quality training.
Along with imparting best academics to budding orthopedic surgeons. we organize regular seminar, symposium, workshop, clinical presentation for quality academic teaching.
PhD
Competency-based training program in Orthopaedics aims to create doctors capable of serving the needs of the community and competent to solve the problems pertaining to the speciality of Orthopaedics and Trauma.
A postgraduate undergoing training MS in Orthopaedics is trained to identify and recognize various congenital, developmental, inflammatory, infective, traumatic, metabolic, neuromuscular, degenerative and oncologic disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
To achieve the above competencies the department focuses on
Patient care: that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
Medical knowledge: about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate sciences, as well as the application of this knowledge to patient care.
Practice-based learning and improvement: that involves the investigation and evaluation of care for their patients, the appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and improvements in patient care.
Interpersonal and communication professionalism.
Evidence-based practice and research: to advance the knowledge and impart them in clinical practice.
Presently, the department functions with two units, each consisting of a mix of faculty members and residents. Together, they shoulder the responsibility of overseeing and managing the various facets of departmental operations.
