Department of Physiology, SMIMS, SMU celebrated 10th International Yoga Day (IYD) on the theme “Yoga for self & society” on the 21st of June 2024.

The celebration started with “Walkathon” where students and staff of SMIMS, SMCON, SMCPT, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Biotechnology, MHA and Department of Allied Health Sciences, and volunteers of NSS, SMU, faculties and staff of SMU participated enthusiastically.

The IYD 2024 program was inaugurated by Honourable Vice Chancellor, SMU Dr Dilip Chandra Agarwal, VSM (Retd.), followed by lighting of the auspicious lamp by Registrar SMU Prof. Dr. Karma Sonam Sherpa and Officiating Dean, SMIMS Dr Luna Adhikari, Heads of constituent colleges, Heads of Offices and Heads of Departments.  Dr Sanjay Kumar, Prof & Head, Department of Physiology, SMIMS delivered the welcome address followed by address by the officiating Dean, SMIMS and the HVC, SMU. The HVC highlighted the importance of yoga in daily life. The program was graced by the message from His Highness Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor, Sikkim & Chancellor SMU.

This was followed by yoga session practice based on the Common Yoga Protocol, Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India. Suprabha Sharma and Dr N Chaya assisted the audience with IYD protocol. This was followed by a webinar in hybrid mode, by Dr Deep Dutta (MBBS, MD, DNB (Endocrinology), DM (Endocrinology). More than 250 participants registered and joined for this webinar online and actively participated in the interactive session.

An Inter-college debate competition was conducted on the topic “Yoga empowers women.” where students from 5 colleges participated: SRM University, Gangtok, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON), Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy (SMCPT), and Department of Biotechnology. The debate competition was judged by Dr Achintya Mitra, Assistant Director in-charge, Ministry of AYUSH, Gangtok, Dr Keerthilatha M Pai, Prof & Controller of Examination, SMU, and Dr Rakesh Kumar Ranjan, Associate Prof. & Head, Department of Geology, Sikkim University.

The first position was bagged by Anupriya Chettri (SMCPT), second prize by Simran Gurung (SMIMS), and third prize by Raima Bhattacharjee (SMIMS).

A geotagged best posture competition was also held where students from different colleges participated (SMIMS, SMCPT, SMCON, Department of allied health Sciences, and Department of Biotechnology, SMU). The 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions for the best posture award was bagged by Sukhmanpreet Kaur (SMCPT), Simran Basnett (SMCPT) and Reeya Sharma (SMIMS) respectively.

A Yoga poster competition on the theme “Exploring the Therapeutic benefits of Yoga” was also held. The participants were from SMIMS, SMCPT, Department of Biotechnology, and Allied Health Sciences, SMU. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd yoga poster award were bagged by Kritika Chettri (SMCON), Sagnik Chakraborty (SMIMS) and Aadarsh Pradhan (SMCPT) respectively.

Finally, the felicitation program was held where certificates and mementos were bestowed on the winners and participants of the above programs. The judges for the event were also felicitated.                               

The IYD 2024 programme was attended by more than 350 participants.

The programme ended with vote of thanks delivered by Dr Bibhushan Dhungyal, Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, SMIMS followed by high tea.
