Health Sciences Research drives evidence based health care and widens / deepens the knowledge base of the health discipline.The medical colleges offering health professional courses should foster research activities amongst faculty and students that would inculcate research aptitude amongst the present and the prospective health care professionals. Such research activities requires structure, plan and coordination. The SMU Research is formed with the mandate of coordinating all activities related to research of faculty / students across all health disciplines. OFFICES & COMMITTEES

The SMIMS RU shall support the activities of the following Offices & Committees under the arena of SMIMS Research

Office of SMIMS Research Unit

The office is managed by the Faculty I/c appointed by the Dean, SMIMS. The Faculty I/c is supported by a Junior Assistant from the Central Library deputed on part time basis. The Office of the Research Unit has the following scope

  1. Coordinate various activities of the committees related to research activities constituted for the specific purpose.
  2. Convene meetings of the committees in consultation with the Chairperson of specific committees.
  3. Maintain the record of research project proposals reviewed by the appropriate committees.
  4. Disburse remuneration of the external members of the committee for their attendance in the convened meeting.
  5. Review, approve, and recommend financial support for faculty/student research project proposals and/or faculty publications through the committees constituted for the specific purpose.
  6. Organize research-related capacity-building programs for faculty/students of health sciences disciplines.
  7. Maintain the repository related to research and publish an in-house journal/newsletter.

Committees

Research Project Evaluation Committee:

The RPEC is been formed with Dean – SMIMS as the Chairperson. The Chairperson of RPEC would also serve as the Head of the SMIMS Research Unit. The mandate of RPEC is to review the research project proposals of faculty, UG & PG candidates for the scientific validity. All research project proposals by default requires clearance from RPEC.

Institution Ethics Committee:

The IEC is an empowered committee having members of the institute and external members formed on recommendation of Dean, SMIMS and approved by the Vice Chancellor, Sikkim Manipal University. One of the external members would serve as the Chairperson of the committee. The mandate of IEC is to review the research project proposals of faculty, UG & PG candidates for the ethical issues.

Publication Evaluation Committee:

The PEC is been formed with a Chairperson nominated by the Dean – SMIMS for the purpose of evaluating the faculty publications and to provide recommendations to Dean – SMIMS for award of remuneration to the faculty for the same.

  1. Financial support to health sciences research of faculty/students.
  2. Education and training programs on research for faculty/students.
  3. Travel grant related to research activities.
  4. Publication of SMIMS journal of health sciences.
  5. Equipment, infrastructure, and facilities.
Principal Investigator Research Theme Details
Dr. Bidita Khandelwal, MD Inflammation in Diabetes Mellitus Associate Dean Research, Professor & HOD Medicine at SMIMS with 20 years of experience in academic leadership, clinical practices, and research. Achievements include establishing the first dialysis unit in Sikkim and receiving the "Certificate of Exemplary Contribution" by Shri N R Narayana Murthy. Authored over 40 papers and received 12 extramural funding grants. Supervises MD and Ph.D. students.
Dr. T. Shantikumar Singh, MD Parasitic Infections & Antimicrobial Agents Professor & HOD Microbiology, focuses on developing rapid serological tests for Paragonimus species and exploring Silibinin as an antimicrobial agent. Supervises MD and Ph.D. students.
Dr. T. Amamacha Singh, MD Biotech Hub Initiatives Professor & HOD Biochemistry, established Biotech Hubs at SMIMS to promote biotechnology education and research. Focus areas include stem cell research and DNA damage studies. Awarded the "Jewel of India Award" in 2015.
Dr. D.K. Jha, MD Obesity & Respiratory Physiology Professor & HOD Physiology, investigates the relationship between obesity and respiratory symptoms, as well as the effects of high altitude on blood pressure and hematological parameters.
Dr. Yogesh Verma, MD HPV Vaccination Studies Professor Pathology, evaluates the effectiveness of HPV vaccination doses and explores screening methods for vaccinated women.
Dr. Mingma L Sherpa, MD HPV Prevalence in Northeast India Professor Biochemistry, assesses HPV infection status and genotypes among women and adolescent girls in Sikkim.
Dr. Nikita Joshi Sonowal Geriatric Functional Impairments Professor & HOD at SMICOP, studies functional impairments and activity limitations among the elderly population of Sikkim to enhance geriatric rehabilitation services.
Dr. Soumyajit Das Cord Blood Ferritin & BERA Associate Professor ENT, examines the relationship between cord blood ferritin levels and BERA thresholds in newborns.
Dr. Polly Lama, Ph.D Cartilage Degeneration & Repair Associate Professor Anatomy, investigates the pathogenesis of cartilage degeneration and the role of alarmins in articular cartilage pain and repair.
Dr. Arundhati Bag, Ph.D Biomarkers for Diabetic Nephropathy Assistant Professor Medical Biotechnology, focuses on identifying biomarkers for early prediction of diabetic nephropathy.
Dr. Karma Gurmey Dolma, Ph.D MDR-TB in Northeast India Associate Professor Microbiology, employs whole genome sequencing to map MDR-TB hotspots and transmission patterns in Assam, Tripura, and Sikkim.
