World Physiotherapy Day 2024

Program Report

Physiotherapy is a health care profession concerned with human function and movement and maximising physical potential. Physiotherapists worldwide strive to maximise the quality of life and movement within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, motor control, learning and rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy, the science is believed to have been practised as early as 400 BC by Hippocrates and Galen physicians as they advocated manual therapy techniques, massage, and hydrotherapy methods in treating their patients.

Physiotherapy as a profession however was institutionalised during the First World War when women were recruited to help work with soldiers, providing physical therapy to help treat the injuries that they suffered from. In 1918, reconstruction aid became the official term to refer to these individuals practicing physical therapy.

In 1921, the American Physical Therapy Association (originally Physical Therapy Association) was organised by Mary McMillan; the same year that “The PT Review,” the first physical therapy research, was published. Physical therapy was then pushed as a treatment for polio by Georgia Warm Springs Foundation in 1924. Simultaneous with the development of polio vaccines, the popularity of physical therapists rose across Europe and the North America.

Physiotherapists are now an integral part not only in hospital premises but as part of multidisciplinary teams in orthopaedic clinics, rehabilitation centres, medical centres, public schools, colleges/universities health-centres, among others.

World Physiotherapy Association was founded in 1951 on 8th September, by 11 national physiotherapy associations as World Confederation for Physical Therapy which held its first general meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. World Physiotherapy now represents more than 600,000 physiotherapists worldwide through its 128 member organisations.

In 1996, 8 September was designated as World PT Day. The day marks the unity and solidarity of the global physiotherapy community. It is an opportunity to recognise the work that physiotherapists do for their patients and community. Using World PT Day as a focus, World Physiotherapy Association aims to support member organisations in their efforts to promote the profession and advance their expertise. The focus for this year’s World PT Day is “Low back pain, and the role of physiotherapy in its management and prevention”.
