A sincere demonstration of solitary and support! Students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) SMU and postgraduate students of Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy (SMCPT) came together to conduct a special program on World Down Syndrome Day at Special School for Disabled in Upper Syari Gangtok, Sikkim.

 The event, held on March 21st, aimed to educate parents on Down Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 700 births worldwide. In the presence of esteemed guest Ms. Normith Lepcha, Secretary, Women and Child Welfare Department, Principal, Sikkim Manipal college of Physiotherapy Prof. Dr Nikita Joshi Sonowal and the Principal of Special School for Disabled Mr. Ram Dhakal, DCPO (District Child Protection Officer) of East Sikkim, Joint Director Disability Tashi Doma Bhutia, Assistant commissioner Mr P.N Pradhan. Postgraduate students from SMCPT led sessions on the importance of early intervention and the various challenges faced by individuals with Down Syndrome, to promote a better understanding and acceptance within the community.

Additionally, the program included an awareness session on physiotherapy and its benefits for individuals with Down Syndrome. Postgraduate students demonstrated various exercises and techniques that can improve motor skills, coordination, and overall physical wellbeing for individuals with the disorder.

The highlight of the event was the variety of activities and games organized by the NSS volunteers from SMU. The students engaged with the children at the Disabled school through interactive games, art and craft activities, and storytelling sessions, creating a fun and inclusive environment for all participants.

Overall, the awareness program on Down Syndrome at the special School for Disability in Upper Syari Gangtok was a resounding success. The collaboration between the NSS SMU and SMCPT showcased the power of community engagement and education in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with disabilities. It was a truly inspiring event that highlighted the importance of raising awareness and fostering understanding for those with special needs.

As the world continues to strive for inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, events like this serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy, understanding, and acceptance towards individuals with diverse abilities.
