PROGRAM REPORT
On 3rd December, Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy student led “Community Engagement and Simulation: Fostering Awareness and Empathy for Persons with Disabilities to commemorate the International Day of People with Disabilities” to commemorate The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3rd. The theme for this year is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future."
This theme recognizes the important role that persons with disabilities play in creating a more inclusive and sustainable world for all. It also emphasizes the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
The theme this year also reflects the current international political and policy context, in particular the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, and the need to create momentum for achieving the 2030 Agenda. The theme seeks to amplify the centrality of the leadership role of persons with disabilities, in all of these efforts - from the global to the local.

In the community engagement, the final year BPT students organized a riveting program which included the following:
The first part of program started with a detailed orientation to the Legislations placed for the benefit of PWDs by the Govt. of India by Final Year BPT students Astha Shrestha , Anupriya Chettri , Sweeta Agarwal and Karma Kelsang Bhutia led discussions on :
1. RPWD Act , enacted in the 2016 but to force only from April of 2017, The Act ha re-imagined a world where everyone regardless of ability can live with dignity, pursue their dreams and contribute to society without barriers. RPWD Act , 2016 has 102 sections divided into 17 chapters . The sections cover a wide range of provision including definitions, rights , educations, employment , social security and grievance redressal mechanism for persons with disability.
2. Recognition of benchmark disabilities under the Schedule of Specified Disabilities which enumerate the following:
Educating the mass gathered on the recognitions and opportunities encouraged by the Govt. of India
3. Mental Health Care
A monumental step towards addressing the mental illness , passed on 7th April 2017 and came into force on 29th May 2018. This act defined Mental illness and promoted the rights of people with mental illness and advocated the right access medical care
The second half of the program led with a thought-provoking simulation which kick started a much-needed conversation about disability and accessibility, opening eyes on the barriers and facilitators of our college campus. By using simulations, the students aimed to promote awareness, empathy, and understanding of disability issues, ultimately leading to more inclusive and accessible communities.
The simulation addressed disabilities such as Visual Disability , Cognitive , Behavioural , Auditory and the barriers they face. The audience were educated on the importance of inclusivity and basic sign language .
The Program ended with an encouraging word of wisdom from Dean, SMIMS Dr. Muralidhar V Pai .
