BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

On the 20th of March, 2024, 'TechMates: Git and GitHub' took place at the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, in the AP laboratory, from 6 PM onwards, marking the first successful event hosted by the All Core Computer Science Students' Society (ACCESS) in the semester. The event was facilitated under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Udit Kumar Chakraborty, the Head of the Department (HoD) of the Computer Science and Engineering department, who also happened to serve as the teacher coordinator for the event, while the student coordinator for the same was Ms. Simran Kumari, the Vice President of ACCESS.

A total of 20 participants, excluding ACCESS members, gathered for an enriching session focused on the fundamentals of Git and GitHub. The event commenced with an introduction to these essential tools for version control and collaboration in software development. Mr. Atul Shince, also a fellow student in his third year in the Computer Science and Engineering department, was the mentor for this particular event, and he provided valuable insights into the concepts of version control systems, setting the stage for an engaging learning experience.

Participants actively participated in discussions, exploring topics such as commits, staging commits, creating pull requests, managing branches, understanding the origin branch of a codebase, and navigating merges. Through interactive dialogues and practical demonstrations, attendees gained a comprehensive understanding of collaborative software development practices.

A notable highlight of the event was the hands-on activity, where all participants successfully executed their first pull request on GitHub. Despite time constraints, each attendee accomplished this milestone, demonstrating their newfound skills and confidence in collaborative coding.

Moreover, the event also served as a networking opportunity for students, allowing them to interact with peers who share a common interest in software development. Through collaborative problem-solving and teamwork, attendees not only expanded their technical skills but also forged valuable connections within the student community.

On the whole, 'TechMates: Git and GitHub' was more than just learning; it was a collaborative journey towards mastering essential tools in modern software development. It proved to be a valuable learning experience for all attendees, thanks to the dedication of Prof. (Dr.) Udit Kumar Chakraborty, Ms. Simran Kumari, Mr. Atul Shince, the rest of the ACCESS Council, and of course, the active participation of the students. The event not only equipped participants with essential skills in Git and GitHub but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and innovation within the student community. Most importantly, it successfully encapsulated the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and lifelong learning that defines the academic community at the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology.
