EVENT SUMMARY

The Department of Mathematics and Student Research Forum (SRF) at SMIT organized a seminar on "Foundation on Mathematics" on 9th August 2024, in the Seminar Hall. The seminar aimed to enhance the understanding of the fundamental concept of mathematics and to explore the ideas involved in basic mathematics proofs. Dr. Biswajit Deb, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mathematics explored the nature of mathematical statements, emphasizing the importance of precisions in language and formulations.

Dr. Biswajit Deb also touched upon the significance of counterexamples in mathematics, explaining how a single counterexample can disprove a general statement, no matter how many supporting examples existing techniques.

He introduced the concept as the logical process of demonstrating that a given statement is true based on accepted axioms and previously established results. He then introduced the basic concepts behind mathematical proof, discussing various proofs.

Dr. Biswajit Deb led an engaging and dynamic session. He succeeded in encouraging audience participation, fostering a sense of community, and creating a memorable experience. By asking questions and inviting the audience to share their opinions, Dr. Deb was able to tap into their passion and enthusiasm for mathematics, making the session more enjoyable and impactful for everyone involved.

The session concluded with a discussion on the importance of proofs in ensuring the rigor and consistency of mathematical theories.
