The Department of Mathematics and Student Research Forum (SRF) at SMIT organized a seminar on "Research and Development Inadequacy in India" on 13 August 2024 in the Seminar Hall. The seminar aimed to identify the gaps and challenges in India's research and development (R&D) ecosystem and discuss the reasons behind the inadequacy, such as funding constraints or a lack of private players.

Summary
Mr. Ongdi Tamang started by demonstrating Kodak's story as a cautionary tale highlighting the need for agility, innovation, and strategic foresight in the face of disruption. He then told us about the advancements of the Harappan civilization, which had a lasting impact on modern society and whose contributions are still impressive today.
He showed a graph comparing global R&D leaders such as China, Germany, South Korea, and the US regarding their R&D investment as a percentage of GDP. He covered the obstacles hindering R&D growth, such as a lack of skills, talent, and government policies. He further discussed the importance of industry-academia partnerships, public-private partnerships, and talent development and retention.
The session concluded with many doubts and queries from the audience, and Mr. Tamang clarified them.
