On 21/08/24 we had the privilege of hosting an insightful session on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) led by Advocate Preeti Basnett. The session began with a comprehensive overview of IPR, where Adv. Basnett provided an in-depth explanation of the different types of intellectual property, including copyright, patent, and trademark. She clarified when and how each type can be utilized, making the complexities of IPR accessible to all attendees.

A highlight of the session was Adv. Basnett's discussion of a landmark court case involving the iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan. In this case, the court recognized that a person's voice, much like their image or name, is an integral part of their identity and cannot be used without their consent. The unauthorized use of Bachchan's voice, especially for commercial purposes, was deemed a clear infringement of his rights, setting an important legal precedent.

Adv. Basnett also provided an extensive explanation of copyright law, enriched by real-life examples. She revisited the Bachchan case to emphasize the practical implications of copyright, and further highlighted how even images of celebrities, such as those displayed in local salons, are subject to copyright protection.

Following Adv. Basnett's presentation, Ajeya Sir delivered an enlightening speech, sharing several lesser-known facts about copyright. He illustrated the enduring relevance of copyright by referencing the popular song "Happy Birthday," which was written by two sisters and remains a copyrighted creation that we continue to sing today.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by a high tea, providing a perfect ending to a highly informative and engaging event.
