Report on one day workshop on “Emotional intelligence among nursing professionals” 

  •  Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON) organized a one day workshop program on “Emotional Intelligence among Nursing Professionals” on 14th July 2022 at Auditorium, 6th level, SMIMS building from 9am-5pm. The programme was attended by 101 nursing professionals from Central Referral Hospital, STNM Hospital, Sochakgang, Ranipool UPHC, Pakyong PHC, Soreng CHC, Sikkim Professional University, Post graduate students of Regional College of Nursing, Guwahati and Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing. The program started at 9:30am with the welcome speech by Mrs. Shrijana Pradhan, Assistant Professor, SMCON followed by lighting of Lamp by the dignitaries. The program was graced by Vice Chancellor Dr. (Veteran Lt. General) Rajan S Grewal, Registrar SMIMS Prof. Dr. K.S Sherpa, Principal SMCON, Head of the Departments and Principal SMCPT. The felicitation of dignitaries was done by offering Khadas.
  • The programme was addressed by Principal SMCON, Prof. Champa Sharma following which Vice-chancellor Dr. (Veteran Lt. General) Rajan S Grewal spoke briefly about the intelligence and its importance in nursing profession and welcomed the resource persons of the programme, Mr. Vithoba Narayan Mhalkar (Emotional Intelligence Trainer, Life Coach, Motivational speaker, Team Builder), Assistant Professor, Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour Bambolim, Goa and Mrs. Arkierupaia Shadap, Associate Professor, SMCON. After the inauguration session, the pre-test questionnaires on emotional intelligence were distributed to participants 15 minutes before the plenary sessions.
  • The plenary session- I started at 10.30 am and was delivered by the in-house speaker Mrs. Arkierupaia Shadap and she spoke about Emotional Intelligence, its elements and strategies. The plenary session II & III were carried out by the external resource person, Mr. Vithoba Narayan Mhalkar, in which he discussed about Emotional intelligence needs and components where he actively engaged participants in activities like optimist and pessimist-thought ping pong game. He grasped the attention of the crowd by elaborating on self-awareness, directing resilience video, relationship and leadership: helium stick activity and self-motivation with supported videos.
  • The plenary session ended at 4pm which was then followed by the valedictory session. The distribution of post-test questionnaire to the participants was done. Feedback from the participants were taken where they shared that the programme was very effective, interesting and motivating. They assured that they will inculcate these elements and strategies in their life and throughout their practice. The participants also suggested that more workshops on such topics should be organized in the future as well. The event was then followed by the distribution of certificates to the resource persons and the participants. At last, pre-test and post-test results were declared by Mrs. Dil Kumari Chettri 1st year MSc Nursing student. The comparison of the pre-test score % (54.5) to post-test score % (63) showed that there was 8.5% increase in the knowledge of the participants. The closing speech was delivered by the organizing secretary, Mrs. Arkierupaia Shadap, thanking everyone who were involved and participated in the programme. The programme ended with vote of thanks by the Master of ceremony.
