EVENT SUMMARY

This past week, SIGIL successfully hosted a 3-day UI/UX workshop designed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to design and develop user interfaces. Over the course of the workshop, participants explored the core principles of UI/UX design, learned the basics of Figma, and gained practical experience with HTML and CSS.

Day 1:

The workshop commenced with a foundational exploration of UI/UX design principles. Participants embarked on a journey into the user-centered design process, gaining a nuanced understanding of the various stages involved in crafting user interfaces that are not only functional but also intuitive and enjoyable to use. They delved into information architecture, learning how to organize and structure content in a way that facilitates user navigation and fosters efficient information retrieval. Additionally, the workshop shed light on user research methodologies, equipping participants with the tools to gather valuable user insights that can inform and guide the design process.

Day 2:

On Day 2, the focus shifted to practical application. Participants were introduced to Figma, a popular design tool widely used by UI/UX designers. Through a series of interactive exercises, they gained proficiency in using Figma to create a login screen. This hands-on session equipped them with the essential skills for using Figma's functionalities to design user interfaces, including adding components and incorporating interactive elements.

Day 3:

On Day 3 delved into the technical aspects of UI/UX design, bridging the gap between design and development. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of front-end development through an exploration of HTML and CSS. They learned how to structure web pages using HTML and style them visually using CSS, gaining a practical understanding of how design translates into code. Following this foundational introduction, participants had the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge by creating a simple page of their choice using HTML and CSS.

To solidify their learning and assess their comprehension of the concepts covered throughout the workshop, participants undertook a graded project that required them to synthesize the design and development knowledge they had acquired. This project consisted of two parts:

  1. Wireframing with Figma - Participants utilized Figma's capabilities to create a simple wireframe, a low-fidelity mockup of a user interface. Wireframing is a crucial step in the design process, enabling designers to visualize the layout and functionality of an interface before investing time in detailed design elements.

  2. Building a Simple Page with HTML and CSS - Leveraging the HTML and CSS skills acquired on Day 3, participants constructed a simple page, translating their design concepts into functional code. This hands-on exercise provided them with valuable experience in front-end development and served to bridge the gap between the design and development aspects of UI/UX design.

To conclude the attendees gained a well-rounded foundation in UI/UX design principles. They were equipped with the ability to use Figma to design user interfaces and possessed a basic understanding of front-end development through their exploration of HTML and CSS. This comprehensive workshop empowered participants to take their initial steps into the exciting world of UI/UX design, providing them with the tools and knowledge to design user-centered interfaces.

I extend my sincere gratitude towards ACCESS for their invaluable support. We sincerely value our partnership and eagerly anticipate continued collaboration in future endeavors.

I thank the speaker Ms. Achira Basu  and SIGIL team members involved in organising the event and for their efforts and vigilance were essential to the success of the workshop.
