Department of Political Science, FHSSLA organised “Mera Pehla Vote Desh Ke Liye” on 6th March 2024 at Seminar Hall, SMIMS building. The focus of this event was to emphasise the significance of voting for the democratic progress in India. The program consisted of various co-curricular activities such as poetry recitation and debate, involving students from the different departments of FHSSLA. Mrs. Srijana Sharma, Convenor, delivered the welcome speech, followed by participants from different departments reciting poems. Subsequently, a debate was conducted on the topic "Mandatory Voting Should be Made Compulsory." The team supporting the motion presented arguments regarding the high voter turnout in elections, the evolution of democracy from ancient Athens to the present day, the inclusion of marginalised sections of society through reservation, and the importance of voting in forming a democratic government. They also highlighted how mandatory voting creates awareness among people and is their right to exercise. On the other hand, the arguments against the motion questioned whether making voting mandatory truly addresses the issue of misrepresentation and if mandatory voting actually creates awareness among the public. The debate was judged by Dr. Bonita Pradhan, Assistant Professor, FHSSLA and Mrs. Srijana Sharma, Convenor, FHSSLA resulting in a victory for the motion. The event concluded with a felicitation of the participants by the judges followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Srijana Sharma.
