On World Parkinson’s Day(11th
April being a second Saturday) was commemorated on 15th April with a
Parkinson’s screening drive and awareness program was organised by Sikkim
Manipal College of Physiotherapy in collaboration with NSS/SMU/SMCPT.
Screening Drive: The
screening drive focused on individuals above 50 years of age to identify early
signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Around the campus and CRH, a total of
46 individuals were screened, of which 29 were found to be normal, 12 showed
mild symptoms, and 5 showed moderate symptoms. At the old age home, 18
individuals were screened, with 16 showing mild symptoms and 2 showing moderate
symptoms.
The program highlighted
the importance of early detection and timely rehabilitation in Parkinson’s
disease. Common symptoms screened included tremors, slowness of movement,
rigidity, balance problems, gait difficulties, and reduced ability to perform
daily activities.
Awareness Program:
An awareness session was also conducted at CRH for undergraduate students by
postgraduate students. The session included demonstrations and discussions on
falls simulation, fall prevention strategies, safe falling techniques, balance
training, Parkinson’s rehabilitation, exercise prescription, and strength
training.
The event provided an
important platform for spreading awareness among the community and enhancing
students’ knowledge regarding physiotherapy management of Parkinson’s disease.
It also emphasised the significant role of physiotherapy in improving mobility,
balance, strength, and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson’s disease
