Context:

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior affecting how a person thinks, feels and acts. It strikes people just when they are preparing to enter the phase of their lives in which they can achieve their highest growth. It is a severe mental disorder affecting approximately 24 million people or 1 in 300 people worldwide. It is probably the most devastating illness that a psychiatrist treats.

Objectives:

The Programme aimed at creating awareness on Schizophrenia, its signs and symptoms and its home management.

The Programme:

The 2nd year, M.Sc. students of Mental Health Nursing Dept. from Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing organized a Health Awareness Programme on Schizophrenia at Level 3, Central Referral Hospital, in collaboration with the Dept. of Psychiatry, Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim. The patients visiting the hospital were the target audience of the programme. The programme was graced by the presence of Dr. (Col) N.S. Chabra, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sanjiba Dutta, HOD, Dept. of Psychiatry, Mrs. Pema Lhamu Bhutia, Nursing Superintendent and other faculties from SMCON. The health talk was initiated by Dr. Anmol Pradhan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, CRH followed by the 2nd year, M.Sc. Mental Health Nursing students of SMCON on Schizophrenia, its signs and symptoms and its home management. The programme ended with an interactive question answer session followed by vote of thanks by the 2nd year, M.Sc. Nursing student of SMCON.
