Context
Tobacco is one of the biggest public health threat the world is facing, killing more than 8 million people every year, including around 1.2 million deaths from exposure to second-hand smoke. As per the findings from NFHS (National Family Health Survey-5), 2021, tobacco use amongst adult women (15 years & above) is at 11.7%, and for adult men (15 years & above) is at 41.3% in Sikkim. The theme for World No Tobacco Day, 2023 is "We need food, not tobacco". It aims to raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable, nutritious crops and to expose the tobacco industry's efforts to interfere with attempts to substitute tobacco growing with sustainable crops, thereby contributing to the global food crisis.
Objectives
The program aimed at creating awareness on the use of tobacco, its effects on health and environment and methods of quitting tobacco.
The Program
Health Awareness program on World No Tobacco Day 2023, Theme: "We need food, not tobacco" was organized at Level 7, Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok by MSc. Nursing students, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, SMCON. The target audience were patients and their relatives visiting the hospital. The event was honored by Prof. W. Ashalata Devi, Head of Department, MSN, Mrs. Yamuna Sharma, and Ms. Naina Thapa, Tutor, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, SMCON and 2nd Year B.Sc. Nursing students, SMCON. The total number of participants were 20-25. The event was initiated by master of ceremony Ms. Shika Gurung and speakers were Ms. Nisha Thapa and Ms. Sujata Regmi. The program concluded with an interactive quiz session and token of appreciation to the participants followed by vote of thanks by M.Sc. Nursing students.
