OVERVIEW

 

  • The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at SMIMS was established in 1997 and it deals with the health care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the post delivery period. It also treats diseases related to female reproductive organs.
  • The department of OBG has endoscopy, ultrasonography and hysteroscopy facilities. All the high risk pregnancy cases undergo foetal health evaluation by Cardiotocography and Ultrasonography.
  • The department started the DNB program in 2006 and since then it has achieved hundred percent successes. It also provides quality obstetric services.
  • The department works in close liaison with the state government hospital at Gangtok for student’s academic activities.

PROGRAMS OFFERED

 

Core Competencies

  • Provide peri-conceptional counselling and antenatal care
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and refer appropriately
  • Conduct normal deliveries, using safe delivery practices
  • Prescribe drugs safely and appropriately in pregnancy and lactation
  • Diagnose complications of labor, institute primary care and refer in a timely manner
  • Perform early neonatal resuscitation
  • Provide postnatal care, including education in breast-feeding
  • Counsel and support couples in the correct choice of contraception,
  • Interpret test results of laboratory and radiological investigations as they apply to the care of the obstetric patient
  • Apply medico-legal principles as they apply to tubectomy, Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (PC PNDT Act) and other related Acts.
  • Elicit a gynecologic history, perform appropriate physical and pelvic examinations and PAP smear
  • Recognize, diagnose and manage common reproductive tract infections
  • Recognize and diagnose common genital cancers and refer them appropriately.

 

Skills Imparted

  • Our training will create a qualified consultant obstetrician and gynecologist who shows skills in application of medical knowledge, clinical skills and professional values in the provision of high-quality and patient-centered care.
  • Provides quality maternal care in the diagnosis and management of antenatal, intra-natal and postnatal period of normal and abnormal pregnancy, capable to manage obstetrical and early neonatal emergencies.
  • Provides services for reproductive tract infections, including sexually transmitted diseases and screening for gynecological malignancies.
  • Provides counseling and family welfare services including various methods of contraception and perform medical termination of pregnancy.
  • Has knowledge for interpretation of various laboratory investigations and other diagnostic modalities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Trained in basic and advanced surgical skills for obstetrical, gynecological and allied surgeries
  • Trained in gynecological endocrinology and infertility, benign and malignant gynecological disorders.
  • Familiar with research methodologies and use of newer information technologies.
  • Knowledge of medico legal aspects in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Keeps abreast with advances in the field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • Facilitates learning of medical / nursing students, para medical health workers as a teacher trainer.
  • Function as a productive member of a team engaged in health care, research and education.
  • Demonstrate empathy and humane approach towards patients and their families
