A webinar on “Women Empowerment” was conducted by Rotary club of Gangtok, in association with Department of Computer Applications, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Majhitar, East Sikkim on 22nd December 2021.

 

The webinar aimed to create perspective on how Rotary club of Gangtok may help in creating awareness on accepting women's viewpoints in the decision making process and also acknowledge them.

 

Inauguration of the Webinar was done by Ms. Kalpana Khaund (PDG, Zonal Ambassador, Girl empowerment, Zone 6).

 

Opening talk was done by Ms. Urvi Khaitan, a Doctoral student in economic and social history at the University of Oxford, she provided an insight into women labour for South Asia, the Title of her speech was “working women and women workers: Female labour in India”.

 

The Second speaker, Ms. Sutapa Biswas, Co-founder and Executive Director of Cancer Foundation of India delivered her talk on “Cancer prevention experience in women of Northeast India – A personal Journey”. She praised Sikkim for coming out as most aware & progressive mindset state in terms of empowering women in ways possible and being the first state for taking up vaccination for Cervical Cancer in the year 2005.

 

The final Speaker, Dr. Th. Binarani Devi, Principal, Thambai Marik College Oinam Manipur shared informations on Gender Gap Analysis , in particular how organizations including Govt. sectors of Northeastern states and Manipur in Particular are doing in terms of commitment, implementation, measurement, and transparency on gender equality issues. The title of her talk was “Women empowerment: issues and challenges in North East India”.

 

The closing remark and vote of thanks was given by the Club President Rtn. Mira Oberoi.

 

These women speakers from diverse backgrounds and geographies have thrown light on the historic and contemporary aspects of empowerment of common women present in all walks of life. All of them stressed on the fact that the Club could actively participate in various activities for empowering women in the state of Sikkim either through schemes or at club level.

 

Over all the webinar was a successful event. It basically catered to showcase and help the majority whose contributions are not highlighted in media or by the media.
