Overview:Emotional intelligence allows us to respond instead of react”. Effective  Leadership  is  not  only  a  requirement  of  every  profession  towards  the fulfillment of its goals but is also viewed as an asset for the organization they belong to. Nursing, being a dynamic profession and the largest workforce in a healthcare organization, takes a major role in health leadership and policy making, while retaining their traditional caring skills. Such an effective leadership is critical in ensuring high quality care, patient safety and facilitating positive staff development. The 1st Year M.Sc. Nursing students of Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing (SMCON) organized a national webinar- “Developing emotionally intelligent leaders: Rendering effective and efficient nursing care” on 18th June 2021 from 3pm to 5pm on Microsoft Teams (MST) Platform. The objective of the webinar was to update the target group on how to develop emotionally intelligent leaders so as to render an effective and efficient nursing care. The webinar was attended by 146 participants from various institution/ organization of different parts of the country.

 

Programme: The Organizing Secretary of the webinar was Mrs. Reshma Tamang, Associate Professor, SMCON. The webinar began with a welcome note by the moderator, Miss Mingma Doma Bhutia, 1st Year M.Sc. Nursing, SMCON. The session was delivered by Mr. Vithoba Narayan Mhalkar, GNM, B.Sc. (N), M.Sc. (N), DHA, MHA, M.PHIL (N), Assistant Professor in Psychiatric Nursing, Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Bambolim, Goa & Emotional Intelligence trainer, Life Coach, Motivational speaker, Team Builder who emphasized on the importance of developing emotionally intelligent leaders for strengthening healthcare and how to fight against the inner emotions like anger to combat workplace incidents.

 

Feedback: Feedback was taken from the participants with structured questionnaire. The participants had a couple of questions which were answered by the speaker at the end and majority of the participants expressed that the webinar was very informative and will be helpful in coping with nursing workplace related issues and developing them into emotionally intelligent leaders for strengthening healthcare.
