NUTRITION PROJECT ON PROTEIN RICH DIET CONDUCTED BY SMCON

CONDUCTED BY:

2nd year B.Sc. Nursing Students, Sikkim Manipal College of nursing

CONTEXT:

Protein are large, complex molecules that plays many critical roles in the body. They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs. Due to lack of protein in our body it can leads to Protein Energy Malnutrition. According to WHO Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) refers to an imbalance between the supply of protein and energy and the body’s demand for them to ensure optimal growth and function .Protein energy malnutrition is a major public health problem in India. It effects particularly the preschool children (<6 years) which can lead to consequences from physical to cognitive growth and susceptibility to infection and permanent impairment in later life. After doing household survey and nutritional assessment of the area , it was found that majority of the people especially children were having lack of protein in their diet and parents were unaware about the value of protein in one’s health and also food rich in protein content. Therefore the second year B.Sc. Nursing students were encouraged to organize a nutrition project on protein rich diet for the benefit of the people.

OBJECTIVE:

This programme was aimed at reaching out to the Radong community under Namli GPU with the message of protein rich diet and its importance and teach the community people how to prepare the food rich in protein.
