MASS HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMME

ON CORONAVIRUS (2019- NCOV)

 

CONTEXT:

The outbreak of 2019 Novel coronavirus has raised alarm worldwide as the number of people infected and death toll continue to rise. The outbreak has been declared as Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by World Health Organization on 30th January 2020. Confirmed cases have been reported in the state of Kerala, India also. To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus and no vaccine has been developed to combat the disease. Since Sikkim borders with China, Nepal and Bhutan and Rangpo being the entry point to Sikkim, SMCON felt the urgency in creating an awareness among the people regarding the disease outbreak.

 

OBJECTIVE:

The programme was aimed at reaching out to community people with the message on coronavirus outbreak, how to identify early and protect oneself from it.

 

THE PROGRAMME: 

The programme was attended by the Dean SMIMS, Principal SMCON, Faculty members from SMCON, Dr. Manoj Mishra M.O i/c Rangpo PHC, Mrs Maya Cintury, President Rangpo Nagar Panchayat, Mr R.N. Adhikari, ASI Rangpo Police station, Teachers and students from Govt. Secondary school, Chanatar and local people of the area. The programme started with a welcome speech by the students followed by felicitation of the guests. Students performed an educative role play on coronavirus, its causes, symptoms, mode of transmission of the disease and provided health talk on preventive measures.  Preventive measures highlighted on the importance of maintaining basic hand and respiratory hygiene, safe food practices, avoiding close contact etc. The Dean SMIMS and Medical Officer in-charge Rangpo PHC enlightened the programme with their informative speech. Local people, school teachers and  school children attended the programme. Informative leaflet on coronavirus, prepared by the students were also distributed. The programme ended with an interactive question-answer session, a group song and vote of thanks by the students.
