Digital Transformation Report

 

Sikkim Manipal University is a fully Digital Campus, enabling Students & Teachers to always stay connected no matter where they are - in Classrooms, Laboratories, Cafeterias, Restaurants, Hostels & Libraries.

  • Based on the NEP 2020 Framework initiatives taken at SMU Campuses are as follows:

 

1. Digital Infrastructure

  • Cloud Computing – SMU is leveraging the Cloud Computing technology as digital infrastructure for enablement of Software as Service; SaaS, PaaS platforms as Service; IaaS infrastructure as Service for Online registration & Admission process, Research Data Management System, SMU ERP Management System.
  • E-Campus – e Campus is a web and mobile based software platform which automates attendance, academics, course mapping, assessment grading, digital learning and LMS platform, designed to cover end to end teaching & learning activities at SMU. This has been developed by our own faculty and development team on web technology.
  • Business Intelligence – SMU is using Microsoft Power BI for data analytics and data Consolidation whereas MIS and Management dashboard as decision support system for quick insights and decision making.

 

 
  • LMS Digital Platforms – SMU has implemented Brightspace LMS and Self Developed LMS portals in eCampus which innovate the learning platform and enable every student to achieve their potential and enrich the classroom to create a better learning experience for all.
 
  • Internet Connectivity – SMU Campus has redundant enterprise Internet leased line from Jio Communication and National Knowledge Network which work in load balancing and provide redundancy.

 

 

  • Online Admission – SMU has enabled the entire admission process digitally driven which automates and manages the entire admission cycle from enquiry to enrollment and fee collection. This platform is integrated with the smartest Chatbot to interact and resolve students’ queries through virtual chats.

 

  • Smart Classes – Enablement of smart classes in the University using digital technology has created dynamic teaching & learning environment which has improved transparency between teacher and students. Learning is now linked to global internet, online references, images, graphs, visuals and live videos, animated films which encourage the students to openly express their opinions in the class through essays and drawings.

 

 
  • Wi-Fi enabled Campus – SMU provides a fully Wi-Fi enabled campus for students and faculties with an access to high-speed internet connectivity within the campus, thus making learning, events and webinars more effective and advanced. Faculty, students and staff can access the IT resources and content at any time in the campus. All the users are provided a secure access with login id and password for using the wi-fi facilities.

 

  • AI/ML enabled Face Detection Biometric – In the campus, SMU has installed face detection biometric system which detects the face mask, eye retina, record the temperature etc. 

 

 
  • MS Office 365 – SMU provides official email ids to every student which help in accessing the SMU’s IT applications and online classes, webinars, events, LMS, Mobile applications, registration etc.

 

 

2. Online Teaching Platform 

SMU provides MS Teams Platform to conduct online classes that engages students with virtual face-to-face connections. It is based on remote launch to keep classrooms connected with valid and secure credentials and performs following online class activities:

  • Create Class
  • Schedule Class
  • Join Class & Capture the attendance
  • Share documents
  • Collaborate contents
  • Create assignments
  • Schedule assignment
  • Solve assignment
  • Grading & publishing the results etc.

Technical Campus of Sikkim Manipal University is the nodal centre for virtual labs that are operated using simulations in collaboration with IIT- Kharagpur under virtual lab projects- an initiative of MHRD, Govt. of India.

 

 

3. Content Creation, Digital repository & Dissemination

  • SMU has established studio for content creation. Further, live classes are operated through MS Teams.
  • SMU has implemented Document Management System in SharePoint Online that serves as a centralized repository for information storage, information sharing with students, faculty and staff, task management, job management, storing business documents like MS office documents, document control, secure information sharing, versioning, and archiving. The System Application design is aesthetic, interactive, intuitive, and fluid in terms of usability.
  • Created contents are stored in digital repository & shared with students using e-Campus portal, OneDrive & SharePoint.

4. Addressing the Digital Divine:

  • Department of Information Technology, SMU organises awareness programme & training of various modules for faculty, students & non-teaching staffs timely to make them digital friendly. Further, SMU has partnered with 17000 ft. foundation and adopted 3 schools at remote locations of Sikkim to promote contemporary education by setting up the DigiLabs – a unique Digital learning program that enables children to learn in school and at home, by establishing highly specialized offline Digital Learning Solution customised for areas with no mobile and internet connectivity.

5. Online assessment & examination

Sikkim Manipal University has digitized the entire process of examination into online assessment system with following key features:

  • Online examination software accepts MCQ as well as descriptive questions.
  • Automated Saving of answers.
  • Recording entire session with webcam and mic.
  • Automated detection of sound variations.
  • Auto generated warnings for closing webcam or microphone, minimizing/ switching browser or opening any other tools/applications.
  • Auto termination if max warning exceeds.
  • Questions can have formatted text, equations, images, and any script.
  • Examination resumption facility for network or power failure.
  • Switching examination from one device to another.
  • Real-time remote exam termination; forceful examination termination by the admin.
  • Admin can send message/ warning or termination alert to examinees.
  • Auto evaluation.
  • Monitoring student’s activities with last recorded image from a window.
  • Status of webcam activity; number of warnings; idle, completed, auto terminated status; re-activation count etc. are available in admin dashboard. 

6. Blended Models of learning & many others:

To promote blended mode of learning, SMU has introduced honours in all the BTech programmes with 180 credits wherein students earn 3 credits from MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) from the choices listed by the respective departments. Further, Technical campus of SMU is SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapters. SMU has Partnered with Manipal Global Education Services Pvt Ltd for coursera licenses, provided to students & faculty members as blended models of learning.
