  • All candidates must have passed (10+2) or equivalent with Physics (P) & Mathematics (M) as compulsory subjects and Chemistry or Computer Sciences or Biotechnology or Biology, as one of the optional subjects. They must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in these subjects to be considered for selection (45% for SC/ST/OBC).
  • A candidate with a diploma in the appropriate branch of engineering awarded by a State Board of Technical Education, and with at least 50% in aggregate in diploma is also eligible for admission to the first year of B Tech (45% for SC/ST/OBC) through entrance examination.
  • A candidate will have to appear for an entrance examination (MU-OET / AIEEE) depending upon the category under which they are seeking admission.

Entrance Examinations

Candidates will have to appear for one of the entrance examinations depending upon the category under which they are seeking admission as mentioned in the table in Admission Process section. The details of these examinations are given in the succeeding paragraphs.

General Category, Defence, North East, DGHC, Paramilitary Force, SMU Staff: The candidates will have to appear for the AIEEE to be conducted by the CBSE. The candidates are also required to fill up the SMIT admission form and submit the same to SMIT by prescribed date. Candidates should intimate their AIEEE ranking to SMIT by FAX as soon as the AIEEE result are declared. They must send the down loaded rank along with a Xerox copy of the original application form already send in order to be eligible for counseling and admission. Counseling will be conducted at SMIT on the dates mentioned separately in this prospectus. Please note that SMIT does NOT participate in the counseling carried out by Central Counseling Board of AIEEE.
Sikkim Category: Candidates should apply to the Director-Technical Education, Government of Sikkim. The Government of Sikkim will conduct an entrance examination (CET), the details of which will be notified by the Director-Technical Education.
MU-OET Applicant: Candidates, seeking admission under this category will have to appear for the entrance test (MU-OET) that will be conducted by Manipal University. Reserved Categories

Sikkim: Candidates seeking admission through Sikkim category need to apply directly to the Director -Technical Education, Education Department, Government of Sikkim.

Defence: Wards of all Defence (serving/retired) services personnel are eligible to apply but preference will be given to wards of personnel posted in Sikkim. They should apply with the following:
  • Certificate from Commanding Officer indicating the place of posting.
  • Copy of transfer order to Sikkim, where applicable.
  • Discharge Certificates/Retired Identity card/Pension Pay Order for retired personnel.
North East: Domicile/Residence certificate from concerned district authorities is required to be submitted.
DGHC: Sponsorship letter from Principal Secretary, DGHC is required, to be submitted.
Paramilitary Force: Wards of all Paramilitary Force (serving/retired) personnel are eligible to apply but preference will be given to wards of personnel posted in Sikkim. They should apply with the following:
  • Certificate from Head of the Office indicating the place of posting.
  • Copy of transfer order to Sikkim, where applicable.
  • Discharge Certificates /Pension Order for retired personnel.
NRI: Candidates seeking admission under this categoryshould beForeign Nationals / Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)/ Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf Countries. Admission under this category will be given after screening conducted by SMU. If the candidate himself/herself is not an NRI, then he/she may be sponsored by his/her father, mother, brother, sister, uncle or aunt, grandparent who must be an NRI. Candidates qualifying from Foreign Universities are required to submit the equivalent grading/percentage of marks from AIU (Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi).
Note: Candidates from Bhutan and Nepal can also appear in the entrance examination MU-OET. If they get a rank in merit then the admission will be given under General category.

  1. In case the number of applicants for the seats in a reserved category is less than the seats earmarked for that particular category, the vacant seats will be added to the General Category.
  2. Candidates are required to retain a scratchcard & a photocopy of the application form with them.

Change of Branch

Students are allotted the branch of engineering at the time of admission to the first year (1st semester) B Tech course on the basis of merit and preference. The allotment so made shall ordinarily be final. However, before the commencement of III semester, change of branch will be considered on the basis of their performance in I and II semester examinations, subject to availability of seats.

Transfer of Students from Other Universities

Admission of students from other universities may be permitted under certain eligibility conditions and subject to availability of seats in the second years of engineering (Third semester). Such admission shall be made at the beginning of the academic year within a maximum period of thirty days after the commencement of the semester. A candidate seeking transfer from another university should have cleared all subjects of the previous year/semester prescribed by the parent university, and should produce the original marks card and a certificate to that effect from that university. They should also produce the NOC from the previous institute.

Such students should also satisfy all other conditions of eligibility as prescribed by Sikkim Manipal University.

Lateral Entry to Second year Engineering

Candidates can directly apply for the direct entry to second year of Bachelor of Technology programme fulfilling the following criteria:

  1. Three years' diploma in appropriate branch of Engineering with minimum 60% marks in aggregate. However, a relaxation of 5% may be considered for SC/ST/OBC. 
  2. Three years' B.Sc degree with Mathematics as one of the subjects, with minimum 60% marks in aggregate.  However, a relaxation of 5% may be considered for SC/ST/OBC Candidates.

Candidates are advised to contact the admission office during the last week of June or visit the website.

Infrastructure / Facilities

Accommodation: The institute is fully residential with separate hostels for boys and girls, and provides excellent accommodation to over 2500 students. The hostel rooms are two-seaters, well furnished, and have attached bathrooms with hot water supply. There is a students' mess and a canteen providing vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. Recreation rooms with TVs, separate gymnasiums for boys and girls and sports facilities are available. Telephone facilities are available in each hostel. It is mandatory for all students to stay in the SMIT Hostel. 

Guest House: A well furnished Guest House is available at the campus. The accommodation in the Guest House is also provided to the parents/guardians of students & visitors depending on availability.
Entrepreneurship Development Cell: The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) helps students in exploring entrepreneurial opportunities and assists them in starting their own ventures. The EDC regularly conducts Entrepreneurship Awareness/Development programs. Innovation Incubation Centre has been added to the EDC to connect the Institution with innovation. Innovation Incubation Centre helps the innovators to translate their ideas in to marketable product and to build the innovation based enterprises.
Library, Reading Room & Internet facility: The Institute has a well equipped library which caters to the needs of students and teachers. Besides course related books, the library also stocks general and technical books. The Developing Library Network (DELNET) facility provides on-line access to leading libraries in the country. The college subscribes to a large number of the leading professional journals in the relevant fields. The Institute is also a member of INDEST- AICTE Consortium and thus has on line access to most of the leading journals in the field of technology like IEEE, ASME, Elsevier (Science Direct), Digital Engineering, DELNET etc. The library also houses an audio visual section and offers Internet connectivity. The library remains open from 8.30 AM to 10 PM everyday including Sundays and holidays.
The Institute has Cyber Cafe to provide internet facility. Keeping with the latest technological trend, the hostels have been provided Wi-Fi connectivity.
Shopping Centre: There is a shopping centre at the campus where following facilities are available:
  • Extension Counter of Union Bank of India.
  • ATM of UTI & UBI Bank
  • Post Office.
  • Telephone Exchange.
  • Stationery Shop.
  • Binding, Lamination, Xerox Shop and PCO.
  • Blue Dart & DTDC courier service.
Competency Certification Center: A competency certification center is established at SMIT in collaboration with NASSCOM. The competency certification center will enable students to appear for online testing for specified competencies. Certificates issued by NASSCOM will be valid nationwide.

Industry Orientation / Projects & Placements

Students pursue project training in many premier industrial/research establishments such as: TCS, Tata Technologies, HCL, Titan Industries, BARC, WEBEL Mediatronics, Skytech Solutions, CATS, Cognizant Technologies, Steaslit Industries, Reliance Telecom, Telco, NHPC, ISRO, Manipal Infocom, ISI, Reliance Infocom, Bharti Telecom, ECE Elevators, Carrier Air Conditioners and HCL Infinet, E- Revmax and Lakhotia Enterprises, Greaves, Acer, MEMG, Manipal Infocom, SNIP, VECC, Jadavpur / Calcutta University among others. Some of the above have started giving stipend during the training period.

Training & Placement

Training & Placement department is the hub of all interaction between the corporate, industries, and Academic/Research Institutions, with Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT). The department functions with the following objectives

  1. To provide in-plant Training to students to supplement their curriculum.
  2. To arrange the final semester industrial projects to work on live problems (Practice Schools).
  3. To bring Industrial establishments to the campus for recruitment of students. To achieve these objectives, the cell organizes courses and training programmes to enhance the aptitude and skill of the students to increase employability. Regular feedbacks are also obtained from the industries on the advances in technology vis-à-vis the facilities in the Institute and appropriate actions are taken.
 T & P department also organizes events like seminars, workshops, guest lectures and corporate parties.

Student Support

Teacher Guardian Scheme: Yet another unique scheme of the institute is the teacher guardian scheme. Under this, each student is allotted a specific teacher guardian who provides emotional support, monitors academic performance, provides necessary guidance to the ward and communicates all such details regularly to the parents of the ward. This scheme has received tremendous support from students and parents alike.

Students' Benevolent Fund: This is a contributory benevolent fund which seeks to provide financial assistance to needy students. The executive committee comprising of faculty members and students participates in the selection of beneficiaries. Twentythree students mainly those who lost their earning parents, benefited from this fund until date.
Medicare: The Institute has well equipped dispensary and resident doctors with supporting staff. Those needing specialized treatment are sent to Central Referral Hospital in an ambulance available round the clock. Medical Group Insurance is provided for medical reimbursements.
Alumni Association: The Alumni association established in November 2006. It has a registered strength of 1000 as on date. They make us feel proud. Many have brought laurels to their parents and to SMIT by doing excellently well in their assigned jobs in India and abroad Some details are on our website. Mode of Payment

  • The fee should be remitted by a demand draft in favour of “Sikkim Manipal University” payable at Gangtok.
  • Parents who are unable to pay fees by DD can deposit their ward’s fee through cash by depositing the same in the bank through bank challan available with Finance Department.  
Schedule of Payment of Fees
Fee can be paid in lump sum amount which is one time every year and to be paid at the beginning of odd semester (1 Aug. to 31 August every year). However the institution offers the students the option of paying the fees in two easy installments per year i.e in the beginning of every semester during odd semester (01Aug. to 31 Aug) and for even semester (15 Jan. to 20 Feb). Final Year students do not have option of two installments (01 August to 31 August).
Note: Delayed payment of fees will attract a modest fine of 0.5% p.m in the first month, 1% in the second and third month, and 2% for 3 months onwards.
